Navy-SEALs-logoGeorge Joseph “Bud” Downing, Jr., 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 24, 2013 in Southbury, CT.
Bud was born to parents George and Florence (Sharpe) Downing on September 23, 1923 in Mount Vernon, NY.
He was predeceased by his bride of 68 years, Josephine “Jo” (Richards) Downing, as well as four brothers and sisters. He is survived by his three children, Dan (Jennifer) King of Prussia, PA; Carol Budzinski (Alex) Bethany, CT; Paul (Beverly) Milford, CT; also 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
Bud proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, 1941-1945, mostly in the south Pacific. He received several commendations and medals for his service, most notably for the sinking of a submarine off the U.S. coast near the Carolinas.
After his military term, he returned home to marry and start a family in Mount Vernon, NY. In 1953 the family moved to Norwalk, CT then in 1968 to Orange, CT.
Bud was a Shop Superintendent for Consolidated Diesel (Condec) in Stamford and Old Greenwich, CT for twenty-five years prior to retiring to Florida in 1975.
Throughout his lifetime Bud loved to fish in Long Island Sound and ballroom dance. He was a highly skilled all around handyman and enjoyed working the flea market (buying, selling, and sharing stories with other navy men.)
He will always be remembered for instilling a good work ethic and honesty to his children.
Services will be private. Arrangements by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury.
