Today, (Tuesday, Sept. 3) marked the first day of school in Orange.
Kindergarten and Elementary School students stepped off the bus at their respective schools, some excited, some apprehensive. One too nervous to make the move from his seat.
One of the best shows of enthusiasm each year can be found at the Kindergarten.
The Superintendent snapped a few photos along with the gallery of parent paparazzi who lined the sidewalks near the entrance.
Colleen Murray greeted each child with a high five or a hug and then directed them up the stairs to their waiting teachers and teachers assistants.
A seasoned greeter, Murray, who used to be the Principal at Turkey Hill School, scans the buses as they pull up to the curb, looking for scared or worried faces and reassures them that everything will be alright.
One little girl ran to her with open arms and sobbed as Murray told her she would have a wonderful year, then, when the time was right, she took her hand and led her up the stairs to join her new classmates.
Many of the parents walked away, feeling sad because their children gave a quick wave and continued on into the school without a second glance their way. Others took dozens of photos as their children stopped and posed.
Ah, kids, you never know what they’re going to do. Just remember to ask them about their day every day when they get home and show interest in their work.
Also, Don’t forget to check your school’s virtual backpack each day for any important notices that may not come home in paper form.
