When you drive through the iron gates of Lauralton Hall, 200 High Street, Milford you can’t help but wonder what goes on inside the beautiful ancient stone building that is a Catholic High School for girls.
Back when I was a freshman, entering the school for the first time 38 years ago in my neatly pressed navy blue uniform jumper, I pulled up my white knee socks and made sure my saddle oxfords were tied so I wouldn’t trip on the laces as I nervously checked and re-checked my class schedule so I had an idea of where I was going.
Some of my courses were in a regular classroom, at least one was in the catacombs, a damp, chilly cave-like room with stone walls and a musty odor.
All of the freshmen tried our hardest not to get into any trouble because of the long standing tale that those who misbehaved were punished by having to clean the spiral staircase in the library with a toothbrush.
I still don’t know if that story is true or not, but I never saw anyone do it during my time there.
What I do know as truth is that the eduction we received was second to none. One of my classmates was Mary L. Tracy Principal Colleen Murray, formerly the principal of Turkey Hill School.
