If you live near Fred Wolfe Park you may have noticed something different tonight — lights!
The Orange Soccer Association went before the Board of Selectmen last Wednesday asking for its approval of temporary lighting for night time soccer practice at Fred Wolfe Park.
Orange has 9-10 year old and 12-year old teams that are continuing onto the State Cup Championships and success depends upon the ability to practice this fall.
The teams can’t practice inside any of the schools for a variety of reasons and the Association ran out of options, so they checked around and secured a few portable light units for a month
If the selectmen approved the request the lights would go up on Monday, Oct. 14 and be used on one big field; one small field; and the parking lot 5 nights per week until Nov. 15 from 6-8 p.m.
The selectmen aired some concerns. Joe Blake said he would rather have heard the presentation from the Park and Rec Commission. John Carangelo said they should do it, “and do it quickly before a child gets hurt.”
Park and Rec Commission Chairman Joe Lembo said he had heard about the request just that morning, and he wondered why he hadn’t been told about it earlier. He suggested the children practice in the lower field at High Plains.
First Selectman Jim Zeoli said he was concerned about the danger of walking in the dark parking lot and traveling on the pitch black driveway. He said the four lights that were secured won’t be enough for what the Soccer Association want to do.
After a bit more discussion the motion to allow the temporary lighting at Fred Wolfe Park on weekdays from Oct. 14 thru Nov. 15 was unanimously approved
