smoothie kingA lot of people have been anticipating the opening of Smoothie King at 350 Boston Post Road, across the street from Fire Station #2 (355 Boston Post Road).

But were you aware that it already has opened?

The shop, offering a healthy alternative to fast food and sugary snacks opened its doors on Sunday, Dec. 8. And YES, the drive up window was approved and also is open.

Orange Live stopped by with a friend, Volunteer Firefighter Rich Williamson, on Sunday, Dec. 15, while waiting for the firefighters to return with Santa after he was done with his special  ”Santa’s Helper” visits. Elf Mama and her control room assistants were thirsty.

At first glance the menu is overwhelming. So many choices and unless you are familiar with Smoothie King, it could take forever to decide. That’s where the staff comes in.

I found Dennis to be very knowledgable and helpful. I have diabetes, so high carbs and sugar could be a huge problem for me.

Dennis asked if I like almonds (yes) and mocha (yes) — not only did he suggest the High Protein Almond Mocha smoothie, but took the time to explain the sugar content and the difference between the regular and skinny varieties of this menu item.

The regular small smoothie has 42 carbohydrates – much too high for me, but the skinny variety has 19 carbs — oh, that’s better.

The sugar content in the regular 20 oz almond mocha smoothie is 37 grams — again, too high for me, while the skinny variety has only 14 grams — still high, but acceptable.

It was nice to be able to watch him prepare the smoothie from scratch an to be treated to a discount coupon at checkout.

Rich grabbed a menu and went back to the firehouse so his wife and the Santa’s Helper dispatch team could decide what they craved, then he came back and placed his order — Fruit smoothies all the way around. Justin and Dennis whipped them up  for Rich. And back at the station, Santa’s helpers were raving about them.

My smoothie was really filling and didn’t cause a sugar spike.

Have your money ready when you come in for your smoothie, they’re not inexpensive, but not overpriced when you consider the quality ingredients that go into each one — or need I say it — look at what people spend on a certain seattle based coffee company’s menu items.

The protein smoothie was so filling that hunger never entered my mind for the remainder of the evening. A healthy meal for less than a fat and carbohydrate filled fast food heart attack in a paper bag.

Smoothie King also offers a large variety of supplements and snacks why not stop by and check out Orange’s newest business. Inside you will be warm and they provide tables and seats for a nice, relaxing visit.

The store is open Sunday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.;  Monday – Friday 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.;  Saturday 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Get a smoothie early in the morning and sip it over several hours – you won’t be sorry. Gift cards are available and would make a nice stocking stuffer.

Here’s wishing Smoothie King a lot of success in its new Orange Home.

When you visit Please tell them you saw it on Orange ct live.
