coaches vs cancerThe high school basketball teams from Amity and Shelton are teaming up to support the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs cancer initiative.

Today (Friday, Jan. 31) Amity will be hosting Coaches vs Cancer games beginning at 3 p.m. with all entrance proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

This is the first year that Amity is hosting a basketball event to take part in fundraising activities for this particular initiative.

Amity Athletic Director Paul Mengold said, “We are excited to be holding our first Coaches vs Cancer Basketball game. We may be battling on the court, but we’re on the same team when it comes to reminding our community and fans about taking an active role in reducing the risk of cancer and fighting back against this disease.”

In addition to the entrance proceeds; the Amity Boys and Girls Basketball teams have been raising funds with:

• Go PINK — purchase a T-shirt and wear it to the games

• Purchase a Wall of Hope card in Honor/Memory of someone who has battled cancer

• Pledge for Points scored during the games vs Shelton today

• Coin Wars at lunch.

Shelton High School recently held an event in memory of Asst. Coach Joe LaPorta’s wife, who lost her battle with cancer. In an effort to reaise funds the teams from Shelton sold hope cards; hosted a “suits and sneakers day”; and are currently collecting pledges to go towards points scored in today’s games.

Shelton Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach Brian Gardiner said, “This is so much more than just a game for us. We dedicate this game every yera to the memory of Jeanne LaPorta,, who lost her life to cancer three years ago. For the last three years our community, students, and faculty have taken the opportunity to help save lives and make a real impact by supporting the American Cancer Society. We take great pride in being a part of the Coaches vs Cancer program.”

Today’s games are scheduled as follows:

Girls JV 3 p.m.

Boys JV 4:30 p.m.

Girls Varsity 6 p.m.
