The Amity Spartans Varsity Hockey Team played their hearts out in a battle against The New Milford Wave today in a tense game that went into overtime.
It was a long first period of endless back and forth until Amity’s Brett McNeil (8), assisted by Adam Shea (5) put Amity on the scoreboard at 6:06.
The second period was even longer — satisfying for Amity fans with the 1-0 lead — until there were just 28 seconds left in the period with a power play by two New Milford juniors, Jameson Steinhart (18), assisted by Blaine McMahon (7) who tied the score 1-1.
The final period saw New Milford pull further ahead halfway through with junior Logan Doud (20), assisted by Senior Ryan Kelly (6) scoring the Wave’s second goal at 7:40.
Both teams played fast and furious and then Amity Junior Kevin Ryan (9), assisted by McNeil tied the score 1 minute and 18 seconds later at 8:58.
Both the Spartans and the Waves spent plenty of time with the puck, desperately trying to get it past their opponents goal keepers, but to no avail and the game went into overtime.
This was a tense time for fans on both sides of the rink (hockey moms are passionate!) Just 1 minute 3 seconds after a New Milford player was sent to the penalty box for the fourth time, Ryan, again assisted by McNeil scored the winning goal at 5:24.
This was an excellent win for Amity, which had to step up its game since one of the key players, Captain Keating Seymour was out with a broken collar bone.
Amity outshot New Milford and both goalies, New Milford’s Nicholas Capriglione (33) and Amity’s Brian Mosher (30) made some amazing saves.
As a spectator, it was wonderful seeing (and hearing) the Amity Army out in force at this game, cheering on the Spartans.
Saturday’s Game was “Senior Night” and a great way for the graduating players to take their bows.
