With Amity High School Principal Charles Britton cheering from the sidelines, the Lady Spartans played a phenomenal first round game on the road to the state championship title, defeating Darien 57 – 39 in a highly competitive battle.

Elise Graham was the high scoring player with 19 points, leading Amity (22-3) to victory. 

Darien’s (9-12) Emily Stein was the high-scorer for her team with 16 points.

Amity Coach Michelle Martinik revealed the game plan for the evening. “We told the girls that we have so many seniors (that will be leaving Amity) and this is it … and that’s how they played tonight. They really worked hard, everything came together. Our defense was phenomenal, and our offence comes from our defense,” she said. “We told our seniors, ‘this is it’ and underclassmen ‘play for your seniors’ and that’s what they did tonight.”

Amity girls who scored: Elise Graham- 19; Molly Ronan – 11; Mikaila Schmitt – 8; Chloe Brinton – 7; Janae Graham – 6; and Amanda Vecchio, Kathleen Feng and Alexa Gibbs each added 2 points.

Darien players who scored: Emily Stein – 16; Kelly Karczewski – 15;  Kaeleigh Morrill – 4; Avery Maley – 3; and Emily Coyle – 1.

Martinik said, “We have Hand on Thursday (March 6 at Amity at 7 p.m.) for the second round. Hand is a great team, it’s gonna be a tough one. We’ve seen them once, we beat them once and hopefully we can do it again.”
