25339366_SSHorrible things can happen anywhere, sadly a murder at Jonathan Law High School today was over the prom.

According to one student who called her father after the bloody incident, a 16-year-old boy asked 16-year-old junior Maren Sanchez, to the prom yesterday — She said “no.”

This morning the boy (identified by classmates as Sanchez’s ex-boyfriend) came to school and found her. According to the student, he attacked her, stabbed her, then slit her throat.

The school resource officer arrested the 16-year-old suspect, also a junior, and he was  arraigned later in the day, charged with murder. Police confirmed that the suspect is on suicide watch.

Sanchez, who school staff described as a “vibrant” honors student and a “well-liked” athlete, died in Bridgeport Hospital.

Grief counselors were at the school for students and staff.

We do not have the name of the boy, because he is a minor, but every news station in the state is at Jonathan Law right now so you will see it on the news, along with the official police version of the story.

This year at Amity we’ve seen several sweet prom proposals, and the ones we didn’t hear about that may have resulted in a rejection, did not end anything like this.

Bless this poor girl’s soul and our condolences to her family and to all of her friends and classmates who witnessed this horrific scene.

School was cancelled today and tonight’s Prom at Law as well as all other activities have been postponed to later dates.
