Three Cub Scout Pack 922 leaders were awarded for their accomplishments and the dedication they offer for volunteering for the local youth during a ceremony at the Polish American Hall in West Haven, on Wednesday, April 30.
Den leader Marty Hummel, who is the current Pack 922 Webelos II leader, was awarded “Webelos Den Leader of the Year.” Marty was also awarded “Den Leader Training” for meeting above-standard training requirements.
Marty started with Pack 922 four years ago when his son, Kyle, joined scouting as a Tiger Cub. Marty joined the Pack Committee and from there, took over as den leader for his son’s den starting the following year as a Wolf den leader. Marty has shown and proven that he believes in the scouting program and attended an advanced leader trainer’s course in 2011 called “Wood Badge.” This is a voluntary course offered to adults in scouting. In order to complete it, the leader must complete five service projects.
Marty not only completed this course, but met all of the requirements in a very short period of time. He continues to have Cub Scout spirit with his den and all the scouts in Pack 922. Marty is also a member of the Orange CERT and volunteers within the community.
Jen Cavallaro, a parent from Orange and the Pack 922 Cub Scout Den 2 leader won this year’s “Bear Den Leader of the Year” award. Jen took over as den leader of Den 2 at the end of last year when the previous den leaders moved out of state.
Jen was asked if she would be interested in stepping up from being a Pack Committee Member to a Den Leader and accepted the position right away.
She has guided the youth in her den and shown that she really cares about the scouting program. Parents from her den are always complimenting her organizational skills and great leadership of her scouts. Her son, Frankie, is one of ten scouts in the Bear den.
Jen has also co-chaired the Pack 922 Holiday Wreath fundraiser for two years. She has proven to be a true asset to Pack 922.
Jeffery Cap, father of two sons, Benjamin and Timothy, are members of Pack 922.
Jeff was awarded the “Scouters Key Award,” which means he has completed various training courses, tenure, and has proven performance as a leader. Jeff was also the recipient of the “Cubmaster of the Year” award.
Jeff became Cubmaster of Pack 922 in 2010, after he completed one year as Tiger Cub Den Leader. Jeff took and completed the “Wood Badge” course in 2011, along with Marty Hummel. Jeff is now on the Wood Badge 2014 staff as a Troop Guide.
In addition to being involved with the Boy Scouts of America organization, Jeff also holds an elected position on the Orange Board of Education, is a member of the Orange CERT, and volunteers to assist with other community organizations.
Pack 922 would like to congratulate all three of our leaders who received these awards. It is leaders in our community like this who keep kids safe and help to teach youth all the essentials needed in today’s ever changing world.
