Elmer Saltzman, 93, passed away peacefully June 13, 2014, at his home, in Hallandale Beach, Florida. He was born March 14, 1921, in Bangor, the son of Louis and Julia Cohen (Epstein) Saltzman.
Elmer attended the University of Maine in Orono. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of the 51st Armed Infantry Regiment, one of the first wave of soldiers to storm the beaches of Normandy. He received a Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart and Victory Medal for his service to country.
Elmer was a lifelong member of Beth Israel Synagogue and former Vice President of the JCC of Bangor. He worked as a real estate agent for many years with Kirstein Reality and Singleton Realty in Bangor.
Elmer’s approachable personality allowed him to maintain lifelong friendships in both Maine and Florida. He was always a devoted husband and loyal family man, and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mildred (Carver) Saltzman; a daughter, Debbie (Saltzman) Chasen and husband, Scott, of Orange, CT; granddaughters, Jackie Chasen of Orange, CT, Jennifer (Chasen) Gosselin and husband, Jesse, of Orange, CT; a brother, Robert Saltzman of Wilmington, Delaware; many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, William Saltzman; and a sister, Ada (Saltzman) Silverman.
The family would like to thank Elmer’s caregivers for all their love and attention, Anjia Rockhead, Gina Rock and Jozette Augustine.
Funeral Services will be held 12 PM, Noon, Monday June 16, 2014 at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center Street, Bangor. Interment with military honors will be at the Beth Israel Cemetery, Bangor.
The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor, following the interment.

A period of mourning (Shiva) will be held at the home of Mildred Saltzman, 110 Howard Street, Bangor, from 6-9 PM, Monday June 16, 2014 through Thursday June 19, 2014.
