latex factoryThere may be something fishy with the fire that swept through the Latex International bedding factory early this morning. The fire marshal has been called in to investigate.
According to published reports, the fire began in the basement dryers at around 12:50 a.m. while about 50 employees were inside — everyone escaped without injury.
At 2:51 a.m. Orange Volunteer firefighters were en route to Derby on a mutual aid call. (This was posted on the Orange Live Facebook page)
Orange “covered” the town while its firefighters were assisting Shelton along with Trumbull, Ansonia, Stratford and other departments in fighting a huge fire in the Latex International Foam Factory, 510 River Road, Shelton.
At around 4:30 a.m. Shelton requested Orange at the fire scene to help with fire suppression. Then, around 6:45 a.m. our Rescue 1 truck was on its way to Shelton as well.

Roads around the River Road factory were closed for part of the morning today, but have since re-opened.

According to Shelton Assistant Fire Chief Nick Verdicchio, one firefighter broke his arm while fighting the fire and three others suffered heat exhaustion.

Officials said there is heavy damage inside the factory, which produces latex bedding and mattresses, and crews from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection have responded to test for hazardous chemicals.

According to the Associated Press, the company also survived an arson fire in 1975.Latex International moved to the 208-thousand square foot building in Shelton after a major fire destroyed its Ansonia factory in 2001.

The parent company, Latex Foam International Holdings, filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this month.
