Peck Place School

Peck Place School

On January 6, 2014, a water leak at Peck Place School caused a history-making crisis — an entire school full of students and teachers were displaced in the middle of the school year. At first, the classes were immediately re-located to the other schools in town (and children were introduced to a whole group of new friends).

Initially everyone thought the school would re-open in a week, but the discovery of asbestos in the glue under the lifting tiles led to a flurry of emergency meetings and the ultimate decision to do major work on the school to the tune of $1.9 million.

Then, during the search for a space big enough for the entire Peck Place School to complete the year, YALE Orange campus opened its hallowed halls and welcomed them. Large open spaces were transformed into classrooms and this plan worked extremely well through to the sixth-grade graduation ceremony.

Meanwhile, back at Peck Place School:

• The asbestos removal in the ceiling tiles, pipe fittings and floors were completed in three phases and Peck passed all of its environmental tests.

• Improvements also were made to the areas around all water pipes and the location of pipes, so they will never get cold enough to burst.

• Bright white ceiling tiles in the classrooms and gym along with new energy efficient lighting make the school much brighter.

• All classroom and hallway walls have been painted “Linen” yellow, the gym and cafeteria are now blue and white. Metal doors have a fresh paint of satin black and the wooden doors have been refinished as well.

Finishing touches:

New Floors are being installed as well as the new roof, metal cabinets are being replaced with wood cabinetry, univents with individual climate controls for both heat and air conditioning.

What kind of reimbursement will we receive?

Still in the process, but state and insurance company reimbursements are expected.

Reimbursement for the roof, univents and cabinetry should be around 36.43%

The Orange Board of Education is confident that the school will be ready to open its doors in time for the 2014-15 school year.
