On Friday night, Amity (1-5) took on Wilbur Cross (4-1) in Woodbridge.
After a very strong game — and near win [27-28] — last week in Branford, Amity hit the field with confidence, in spite of the odds.
In the first quarter, Amity was ahead 6-0, then in the second quarter with 5:07 left on the clock, another goal and 2 point conversion to bring their lead to 14-0.
After the Amity Dance Team gave a spirited halftime show, the Spartans came out onto the field with the same winning attitude that carried them through the first half.
In the third quarter, just as it appeared that the Governors were going to get onto the scoreboard, Amity Junior Matt Weidenfeller (4) intercepted a pass near the goal line and ran 99 yards to make a touchdown for the Spartans. Jordan Conn’s (27) kick was good and the Spartans had a solid 21-0 lead over the Governors.
Soon after, Amity Junior Luke Smith (10) crossed the goal line, but there was a flag on the play for holding, and the TD did not count.
When it seemed like Amity would enjoy a shut out, Kwane Taylor (1) made a move along the sideline and scored for Wilbur Cross with 6:44 remaining in the game. A 2 point conversion narrowed the margin but the Governors couldn’t do any better than that and the Amity Spartans won its second game of the season 21-8.
Records: Amity 2-5; Wilbur Cross 4-2
