The late Robert Fumiatti was well-respected and much-loved in every capacity of his life. As a youth hockey player under coach Michael Richetelli, or as #8 on the Blue Devils hockey team in West Haven, as a coach for the Amity Spartans alongside Richetelli, as a New Haven Police Officer and as a husband and father.
On June 13, 2002, Officer Fumiatti was shot in the face in the line of duty and passed away from complications of that incident. End of Watch Wednesday, January 10, 2007
His gravesite is in the Orange Center Cemetery.
Today is the 11th anniversary of Rob Fumiatti’s death and tonight, after a unanimous vote at the West Haven School Board meeting last week, his #8 Hockey Jersey will be retired, and no player will ever wear it again.
Richetelli teared up as he spoke about the upcoming ceremony for his former player and colleague.
“Rob was a coach at Amity, and he was on my youth hockey team,” Richetelli said choking back tears. “It’s going to be an emotional night. We’re going to have to try to separate the emotion from the game.”
All of the Amity coaches remember Fumiatti fondly.
If you are going to the West Haven/Amity game at 6:30 p.m. make sure you arrive early for the ceremony.
