Mary was born in West Haven, daughter of the late Libero and Lucia DiStruco Prata.
She was the mother of Cynthia Romanoff of Orange, Donald Jewell of East Haven and the late Elaine Jewell, grandmother of Michael Demetrio, Jeanna (Matthew) Cascella, Gabriel Martinez and Maria Martinez and great-grandmother of Cameron and Morgan Cascella. Mary was predeceased by her nine siblings.
She was an active member of Holy Infant Church, a communicant, choir member, member and past president of the Women’s Guild, she even served on the Parish Council. She was a member of the Orange Historical Society, Orange Friendlies and a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #127. She was the first member of Orange Unit, where she was awarded Life Membership.
Mary was first runner-up in the Mrs. America Contest in 1961. She ran the chair exercise class at the senior center for more than 30 years. She received the “Living Treasure’ award from the town of
Orange, for her lifetime of outstanding service to the community.
Both she and her husband were members of the Memorial Day Committee for more than 50 years and they received an award for their continuing service.
Prior her retirement, she worked for many local area companies.
The hours for visitation will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the West Haven Funeral Home on the Green.
Family and friends are asked to go directly to Holy Infant Church on Saturday morning for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.
Interment will follow in Orange Center Cemetery.
