On Saturday, February 10, the Amity wrestling team competed in the SCC tournament held in Alumni Hall at Fairfield University.

Amity had five wrestlers place in the top 3 of their respective weight classes.

Sophomore Aiden Hebert was crowned Champion at 120 lbs., Junior Justin Griffin (185 lbs.) and Senior Matt Rothman (152 lbs.) placed second, while Seniors Christian Chadwick (113 lbs.) and Sam Keylock (160 lbs.) placed third.

As a Team, Amity finished 4th out of 12 teams with a team score of 90 points. This is Amity’s highest
place finish since 2009.

Head Coach Ryan Roddy said “The Varsity Squad had a really great night! With one Champion, 2 runners-up, and two third-place finishers, we were able to achieve another one of the goals that we set at the beginning of the year, which was to place in the top 5 as a team at the SCC tournament.”

This was one of two goals the team has achieved this year. The other came on the last dual match of the season where Amity defeated Jonathan Law, at Jonathan Law High School, 46-35 to win the SCC B division title.

Looking forward to the Class L state tournament beginning on Friday, February 16, at Bristol Central High School. Amity expects to have several wrestler’s place in the Class L tournament and advance to the State Opens.

The winning kicked off for Amity on Friday night with the JV SCC tournament, also held at Alumni Hall, where Amity saw their JV squad put on an impressive performance. Four wrestlers were crowned JV SCC champions, Colin Bufford, Jon Pirre, Josh Cala, and Brandon Messina, along with two runners-up AJ Pocerwicz and Christian Giordano finishing second.

Head Coach Ryan Roddy said “It was great to see the JV wrestlers show off the hard work they’ve been putting in at practice. The future of this program looks great and I’m looking forward to seeing many of them breaking into the Varsity line up next season.”
