Jeffrey Layne Johnson, 56, beloved father of Blake Lee Johnson, 21, and daughter Devin Christina Johnson, 19, passed away on May 8 at his home in Delray Beach, Florida, where he recently moved to be close to his children. Jeff is the son of Robert and Jean Simmons Johnson of Branford, Connecticut, formerly of Woodbridge and Guilford. Jeff was born on January 18, 1962 in Loveland, Colorado, and in 1969 moved with his family to Woodbridge, Connecticut, where he attended schools in the Woodbridge/Amity school system.
Jeff was senior year swim team captain, swimmer/diver for the Amity High School swim team and swam as well for the Woodbridge Club swim team. He attended Colorado State University, then worked at London Labs Ltd. in Woodbridge.
While married to Moya Waters, together they owned and operated Pickles Deli in Milford, and he later managed the Hilario Deli in Newtown, both reflecting his love of cooking and creating his own signature dishes. Jeff also worked in the banking field with Peoples Bank and Wells Fargo mortgages.
He loved music, cooking, fishing, golf and singing; clamming and handyman projects with his son; and doing impressions and going on ice cream escapades with his daughter. Jeff could build and repair anything, was always so helpful, often cooking a Thanksgiving turkey for his fellow employees.
In his youth, he was known to rescue and care for injured birds and other animals. Jeff is remembered by his family and friends for his incredibly outgoing, charismatic and jokester personality, his gourmet cooking prowess, and his wonderful singing voice, entertaining listeners around a piano or singing karaoke.
In addition to his children and parents, Jeff is survived by his paternal grandmother Mayetta Johnson, his sister Debrajean Overholt and husband Kent and their three children, Lexie, Beau and Jack; his brother Deric Johnson and wife Christina and their three children, Michael, Tyler, and Nicole; his Uncle Don Simmons (Gladys), Aunt Joan Loomis (Kirk), Uncle Don Johnson (Kathy); cousins Sean and Tracy; Jim, Doug and Lisa; Christine; Tina and Darcy; Teresa, Rodney and Kurtis, Chad and Elizabeth; Roland and Renee; and half-sister Tina.
A memorial service of Thanksgiving will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2018, at 10 a.m. at The First Church of Christ, 5 Meeting House Lane, Woodbridge.
For the benefit of youth opportunities to learn safe swimming, healthy lifestyle activities, and in remembrance of Jeff’s love for the sport, the family requests that contributions be made in his name to the Woodruff Family YMCA (youth swim program), 631 Orange Avenue, Milford, CT 06461.
