Boys Ice Hockey: A Hell Of A Home Game

The Amity Boys Hockey Team hasn’t had the most stellar season, spending much too much time in the penalty box, and a 1-6 record prior to Wednesday night’s home game against Guilford.

Yes, the boys have had six losses, but none of them had a humiliating point spread.

Last night the boys took to their home ice at the Bennett Rink in West Haven with a new attitude. They played hard, like the team we got to know in their inaugural game this season.

Guilford scored in the first period and hung on to that lead until the buzzer sounded.

Second Period

Both the Grizzlies and Spartans played hard with Guilford pulling further ahead after 11:35 minutes and quickly scoring again 1:10 later. (3-0).

With 3:19 remaining in the period, Guilford took an impressive 4-0 lead.

Then, like a flash, the Spartans came alive, showing their true spirit and scoring their first goal 16 seconds later, giving fans a bit of hope.

Then with a new burst of confidence, they skated across the rink and scored again with just 2:01 left on the clock, narrowing the lead to 4-2.

Third Period

With the Spartans zoning in on a victory the Grizzlies fought hard to stay on top. More than halfway through the final period, Guilford struck again. At 8:36, they brought the score to 5-2.

It took nearly 3 minutes before the Grizzlies succeeded in making another goal, now pulling even further ahead to 6-2.

Just as it seemed all hope was gone, the Spartans came through again, shooting in the final goal with only 1:12 remaining in the game.

Yes, the Spartans had another loss, but played like winners, skated fast, shot with every opportunity and never gave up.

Amity’s next challenge will be on Monday, Jan. 24 against the East Haven CoOp (7-1) at the Northford Ice Pavilion at 8:45 p.m.
