The Lady Spartans had an excellent (21-6) season, and once again, made it all the way to the Class LL State Championship game. This year, they had to face off against their SCC Rivals, the Cheshire Rams whom they’ve not been able to defeat in 2016.
The weather was better for the girls at 4 p.m. than for the boys, who had to play their first inning in the rain, then wait out a 2.5 hour rain delay in Middletown.
Our hometown girl, Katie Koshes, who honed her pitching skills in the Orange Little League and up, did a great job from the mound, striking out seven, walking four and allowing only six hits in 5.2 innings.
Morgan Perry relieved her at the end of the game.
The game was scoreless through the top of the fourth, then the Cheshire Rams got their ah-ha moment with four runs.
The final run came in the seventh inning, and Cheshire retained its perfect 27-0 season and clinched the state title, 5-0.
Our girls softball team has nothing to be ashamed of. They played some great ball this season, always kept their heads held high, demonstrated good sportsmanship and did everything together as a team — “There is no ‘I’ in TEAM.”
Thank You ladies for a great season.

Going into the Class LL semifinal game against No. 6 Amity at Biondi Field in West Haven on Monday night, the No. 2 Southington Blue Knights must have been pretty confident that they would be playing in the State Championship game later this week. Amity will face No. 1 Cheshire (26-0) for the CIAC State Championship Title this weekend — site and time to be announced.
NOTE: Undefeated Cheshire is a tough competitor they’ve defeated Amity 3 times this year 2-0 on April 25, 5-4 in overtime on May 11, and 4-1 in the SCC championship game on May 26. They seem to like to bunt lately so, keep that in mind…. and keep an eye out for Cheshire’s Abby Abramson and Hannah Salvietti (both hit homers in the SCC Title game) Go Amity!

In 2015, the Amity Boys Baseball and Girls Softball teams both won the SCC Title. The boys went on to win the state championship.
This year’s teams have big, big cleats to fill. With the graduations of memorable players on both teams: Softball-Janaya Young, Jill DeMaio Baseball – Matt Ronai, Devin Belenski, Mike Appel, these players have to step up to the plate and do their best.
The 2016 teams have been playing scrimmage games over the past two weeks and so far, they are looking good.
