Here come the Spartans

Here come the Spartans

The Amity Football Team is what some call a “Young Team.” With 7 not so stellar seasons behind them, maybe 2016 is their time to stand out in the crowd.

The Spartans are an SCC Division II team and last year’s record was 2-8.

Now in his second year as head coach, Ted Czepiga will enter the William Johnson Football Field at Amity with the 2016 team for its annual game against the Shelton Gaels at 7 p.m.

Amity lost four valuable players with last year’s graduation: Quarterback Mike DeVito; Kicker Jordan D’Onofrio; Tight End Chris Daddio and Lineman Andrew Tudino.

Czepiga is hopeful that his young team will do well this year, with a stronger, faster offensive line.

Senior Liam Butler is the Quarterback; Senior Colin Beaulieu, who wowed fans last year, is one of the top running backs in the league, and we believe he will not disappoint us this year.

Rounding out the most promising players list are Senior Lineman Kyle Wilkens, Senior Running Back Chase Burzynski; Senior lineman Ryan Bedini; Senior Tight End Al Pacelli; and three juniors, Running Back Ryan Sabo; Lineman Luigi Luciani Jr.; and Wide Receiver Matt Weidenfellar.

Former Amity player Ed Choiniere has retired, so Teacher Rob Kennedy will be in the announcers booth.

Come on out to Amity tonight and show the Spartans some love.

The Amity Dance Team, under the direction of a new coach also will be on hand.

IMG_8308Come cheer the Amity Spartans Football Team on at the big Thankgiving Day Game against North Haven at the William Johnson Field in Woodbridge tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.

As you may know the Spartans have not exactly had a stellar season, but when they win, they Really Really win big!

Although North Haven has won the past six consecutive Thanksgiving match ups, the two teams are tied for wins and have had 1 tie since the pairing began (9-9-1) 20 years ago.

North Haven has a powerful team and an undefeated season record 9-0, while Amity has a lot of spirit and drive and talent, too with a season record of 2-7.

In 2014 North Haven won 40-20, but don’t see that as a sign of things to come.

The 2015 Spartans can kick it into gear and upset North Haven (and that really WOULD upset the Indians).

So give the Amity Spartans your faith and share the spirit this Thanksgiving. Go Amity!

And, will someone bring Ed Choiniere a hot chocolate or a coffee in the announcers booth before he has to ask for it this year?

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Amity Spartans had a tough opponent for their first regular season game at Seymour on Sept. 11.

The varsity team, which lost 18 players to graduation in June, played hard, and they played like a team — a positive reflection on the coaching staff.

Seymour got the party started with 3-yard touchdown pass from Seymour quarterback Jaylen Kelley to Matt Vartelas with just 5:26 left in the first quarter. Chase Desautels’s kick was good and the quarter ended with a score of 7-0.

The Wildcats runningback Joey Salemme #5, a junior, got his hands on the ball and every time, he ran like the wind. Sslemme seemed unstoppable, although the Spartans did take him down a few times.

At 9:54 in the second quarter Amity tied things up with an effortless 53 yard run by Matt Attolino, Jordan D’Onofrio’s kick was good.

Then Seymour pulled ahead again with Salemme’s 48 yard run and Desautels’s kick, with just 8:02 remaining in the quarter.

Salemme did it again with a 13-yard run, and Desautels’s kick with 1:58 left.

Amity answered with a 1-yard run by Dchaun Wilson with just seconds remaining on the clock, but the kick failed.

The half time score was 21-13 (Seymour)

Just 3 minutes into the third quarter, Salemme was at it again, racing down the field for 49 yards widening the margin to 27-13.

Unfortunately, both teams received penalties when a fight broke out and Seymour’s Lineman Brandon Otero and Amity’s Jesse Kwolek both will miss next week’s games after being ejected from this game.

After the scuffle, DeVito made a 12-yard pass to Matt Attolino and D’Onofrio’s kick was good bringing the third quarter score to 27-20

In the fourth quarter, Salemme made a 53-yard touchdown giving Seymour a 33-20 lead with just 2:12 left on the clock.

Even so, the Spartans refused to give up. The team rallied and DeVito made a 32-yard touchdown pass to Matt Attolino, D’Onofrio’s kick was good, narrowing the margin to 33-27.

Team records: Seymour 1-0; Amity 0-1
