On Tuesday, June 6, the boys go up against Danbury (10-9 last documented record on CIAC website) at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury at 7 p.m.
Going into the second round of the state championship meet at Amity on Thursday night, one might think that the Lady Spartans, being a superior team to Danbury may have an easy time on the court, but while watching the first and second nerve wracking games a cloud of uncertainty began to dim the hopes of Amity fans.
In Game 1 the Hatters had Amity trailing by two points for most of the game, 12-10; 17-15; 19-17 until the Lady Spartans finally tied things up at 19-19, but then Amity fell behind 20-23; 20-24 — “What is going on?”
The Spartans pulled themselves together and narrowed the margin by one point — 23-24; then tied 24-24; and pulled ahead 25-24; 25-25; 26-25 Amity and finally a sigh of relief with a 27-25 victory for the Lady Spartans.
Heartbreaking for the Danbury Hatters who fought so hard, but great for the home team.
Game 2 belonged to the Hatters, they played just as hard as they had in the first game, taking an early 4-1 lead and never looking back. Amity trailed by 5 or 6 points for much of the game, then 10 points, narrowing it to 6 points but they clearly had been outplayed this time as Danbury finished it at 25-17.
The Lady Spartans regrouped after the loss and came out with a vengeance for game 3 demonstrating the skills we’ve come to admire in them. They squashed the Hatters 25-9.
Game 4 was more evenly matched, but the Lady Spartans came out on top 25-22 and advance to the Semi Final Round (at Amity) on Saturday.
