The Lady Spartans hosted the Shelton Gaels in Woodbridge on Thursday, Dec. 22.

Both teams are great this year and they bounded onto the court ready to win.

First Quarter

Shelton took an early lead, scoring its first basket in the first minute and then the battle began. Within 21 seconds Amity tied the score.

There was a lot of back and forth, with Shelton holding a 2 point lead through most of the first quarter. But the Lady Spartans fought back and ended the first quarter on top at 14-10.

Second Quarter

At the 5 minute mark, Amity held a 19-16 lead, but by the end of the quarter, Shelton enjoyed a sizable  30-19 lead.

Third Quarter

Amity outshot Shelton, overtaking them at times, but came up one point short (33-34) by the end of the quarter.

Fourtth Quarter

Free Throws were the saving grace for both teams in this game especially toward the end. The teams would tie, and someone would break it from the foul line.

Freshman Jillian Martin (15) was Amity’s Free Throw Queen. She couldn’t seem to miss. Her perfect form brought the Lady Spartans from a narrow deficit to a 42-42 tie at the end of the fourth and pushed the game into overtime.

The Fifth

With 1:06 left in overtime, the teams were tied at 48-48. After some free throws on both sides and just 36.1 seconds remaining Amity pulled ahead to 51-49. Martin sunk a foul at 4.4 seconds to finish this nailbiter at 52-49.

On Friday night, the Amity Spartans football team went up against the Cheshire Rams in a non-conference game in Woodbridge.

Following a painful 42-6 loss to Shelton on September 9, going up against the Rams could not have been an easy task.

There was a faint bit of hope at the beginning of the first half, when the first quarter was scoreless. Yet Cheshire came on strong and made the first touchdown of the game almost immediately after the second quarter began. They went on to make 26 points, and kept Amity at zero.

The third quarter was disheartening for Spartans fans as the Rams tacked on an additional 10 points, and despite their best efforts Amity could not get on the scoreboard.

With the Rams ahead by 36, the Spartans, determined not to be shut out, showed what they were capable of in the final quarter, successfully making two touchdowns and extra points. Narrowing the point spread 36-14 in the end.

Colin Beaulieu (#11), Chase Burzynski (#32) and Ryan Sabo (#15) consistently show their strengths in each game. Junior Jordan Conn did an excellent job kicking against Cheshire. Paul Buda, also a Junior demonstrated strong quarterback skills.

The Spartans have a home game against Jonathan Law (1-1) on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.

That will be the last Home game until October 28.

Here come the Spartans

Here come the Spartans

The Amity Football Team is what some call a “Young Team.” With 7 not so stellar seasons behind them, maybe 2016 is their time to stand out in the crowd.

The Spartans are an SCC Division II team and last year’s record was 2-8.

Now in his second year as head coach, Ted Czepiga will enter the William Johnson Football Field at Amity with the 2016 team for its annual game against the Shelton Gaels at 7 p.m.

Amity lost four valuable players with last year’s graduation: Quarterback Mike DeVito; Kicker Jordan D’Onofrio; Tight End Chris Daddio and Lineman Andrew Tudino.

Czepiga is hopeful that his young team will do well this year, with a stronger, faster offensive line.

Senior Liam Butler is the Quarterback; Senior Colin Beaulieu, who wowed fans last year, is one of the top running backs in the league, and we believe he will not disappoint us this year.

Rounding out the most promising players list are Senior Lineman Kyle Wilkens, Senior Running Back Chase Burzynski; Senior lineman Ryan Bedini; Senior Tight End Al Pacelli; and three juniors, Running Back Ryan Sabo; Lineman Luigi Luciani Jr.; and Wide Receiver Matt Weidenfellar.

Former Amity player Ed Choiniere has retired, so Teacher Rob Kennedy will be in the announcers booth.

Come on out to Amity tonight and show the Spartans some love.

The Amity Dance Team, under the direction of a new coach also will be on hand.

IMG_2295Friday, Jan. 15 was a huge night for Amity Basketball player Elise Graham, a senior.

With only 5 points before she made school history, she sunk a 3-pointer then, her teammates worked with her, passing her the ball and edging her closer to the goal.

In the first quarter it happened, Emma Gehr (11) passed the ball to Elise who took a shot and made another 3-pointer, and she became the 10th basketball player in school history to make 1,000 points.

The stands erupted in cheers as the crowd revealed the “1,000” signs, posters and giant balloons they’d been concealing. Elise’s dad, Derek did his famous “Rocky run” dashing down the bleachers to the floor and back again, as he has in the past whenever one of his daughters made an exceptional play.

The buzzer sounded and both teams went to their respective corners. Debbie Davis announced the achievement as Elise hugged her parents and sister, former Lady Spartan, Janae, mid court while the elated fans continued to cheer.

The game resumed and as always, Graham continued to do her best for the Lady Spartans, scoring 27 points (including five 3-pointers).

The 1,000 Point Club

Others who’ve accomplished this amazing mark are: Ed Goldstone (1964), Greg White (1968), Gary Bello (1971), Mike Gambardella (1974), Stacy King (1981), Ann Moscovics (1983), Bob Coppola (1999), Zac Campbell (2013) and Chloe Brinton (2014).

Brinton’s sister, former player Courtney, is this season’s interim coach while coach Michelle Shoop is on maternity leave.

Shoop was on hand for the game, too, whispering coaching advice from the sidelines, but no one could hear it except former Athletic Director Paul Mengold, who was watching the game next to her.

Congratulations Elise, all the best to you for the rest of this season and at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The Graham Sisters in 2014

The Graham Sisters in 2014

Over the past several years we’ve watched the Lady Spartans Basketball team shine with two Orange residents often leading the scoring.

Janae Graham graduated left younger sister Elise (24) at the helm.

Tonight, Amity 6-3 will go up against Shelton 7-2 in Woodbridge at 7 p.m.

During the game we may see a bit of history made… Elise only has to make 5 points to mark her 1,000th career point.

Come on out to Amity High School tonight to witness history in the making with our hometown girl, Elise Graham!
