Although Milford rallied hard and hit well, Orange came out on top, blanking their opponents 4-0.

There were three exciting close calls with Brian Ronai, Al Smith and Rohan Patel sliding in to home plate and then waiting to see if the umpire saw the same thing Orange fans witnessed. (All ended in Orange’s favor)

Orange improved to 12-7, landing in third place in zone 2.

Today the boys are playing NOW in a double header at Brinley against the #5 East Haven 89ers (12-9 record)

The Orange Post 127 Baseball Team hosted New Haven at Brinley Field on Monday night.

This is the second time the two have played against one another, the last time was on June 17 in New Haven. Orange won 5-1.

Mike Ficaro

Mike Ficaro

With pitcher Mike Ficaro on the mound for Orange, and Sean Ranz working for New Haven, both teams had a fair share of give and take.

Ficaro limited New Haven to four hits, struck out four and walked two.

New Haven loaded the bases in the third with no joy.

Ranz allowed just four hits, struck out seven and walked two.

In the second inning, Orange’s Rohan Patel managed to walk after two outs.

During the fourth inning a light sprinkle began to fall and the game continued.

The game was scoreless until the sixth inning and Orange came alive when an error, then a series of singles started the cycle that led to the game’s three and only scoring runs.

With that, Orange shut out New Haven 3-0 and improved its record to 9-5.

New Haven’s record is now 5-9.

Tonight Orange (9-5) is at home again, this time, playing against Milford Post 196 (5-7) at 7 p.m.

"1-2-7"

“1-2-7”

The American Legion Post 127 (19 and under) Baseball team has gotten off to a slow start.

With it’s first games (a double header) on Tuesday, June 14 against Stratford at Brinley Field in Orange, the team was four men down due to Amity High School’s post season obligations.

The first game at 5:45 p.m., had Stratford leading by 2 in the first inning and Orange tying things up in the second.

The score remained tied in the third with each team adding one run.

At 3-3 it was anyone’s game until Stratford pulled ahead with one final run in the fifth, ultimately winning 4-3.

Game two at 7:45 p.m. was drastically different.

Amity took a quick lead with one run in the first.

Stratford tied it up in the second then, kept going with one in the third, two in the fifth, and two in the seventh innings. Taking the second game 6-1.

The two teams met again on Thursday June 16 at Penders Field in Stratford.

This, too ended as a victory for Stratford 2-1.

Records: Orange 0-3; Stratford 3-0

Orange Roster

If the names on the Orange roster sound familiar, it’s because 11 of the players were on the history-making *2016 Amity Spartans Baseball team — some of them are even wearing their Amity numbers on their Legion uniforms.

*Chase Bursinski (25) outfield/relief pitcher, *Liam Butler (26) pitcher/third base, Lou DeGennero (7) second base/pitcher, Mike Ficaro (4) pitcher/third base, Dan Jaques (18) outfield/pitcher, Dave Kennedy (3) second base/relief pitcher, *Ben Lodewick (45) pitcher/left field, Ronnie LoRicco (6) outfield/pitcher, *Eli Oliphant (16) center field/pitcher, *Rohan Patel (15) pitcher/second base/third base, Doug Rives (22) starting pitcher, *Brian Ronai (8) short stop/starting pitcher, *Max Scheps (21) pitcher, *Al Smith (32) catcher/first base/pitcher, *Mike Stewart (10) pitcher/second base, *Chris Winkel (23) first base, *Pat Winkel (13) catcher.

Even though the first three games were unimpressive, we’re sure the boys will come together and things will pick up very soon. Legion is tough, a short season with lots of double headers — they’ll find their stride.

The boys have an extremely hectic schedule for the remainder of this season.

They have nine upcoming home games on Brinley Field at Old Tavern Park, so come cheer them on.

IMG_1955The Amity Spartans hosted the Southington Blue Knights for the CIAC Class LL Quarter-final in Woodbridge Saturday afternoon.

The teams seemed fairly evenly matched through the top of the fourth inning with great pitching on both sides. THEN Amity showed why they are Number 1 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Blue Knights managed to get one run in the fifth inning, but that was the end of it.

The Spartans picked up another run in the sixth inning and that’s all she wrote — Amity wins 5-1 and advances to the Semi-finals.

Amity will face New Milford at Muzzy field in Bristol Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

IMG_0901Something cute (and really nice) came out of the SCC Baseball Championship Game on Saturday.

Two Little League players who’d been chasing after foul balls during the game, approached the three Amity Team captains, Brian Ronai (2), Eli Oliphant (16) and Chris Winkel (23) after the game and politely asked them to autograph the balls.

Not a bad idea, it gives our champs some practice and the balls could be worth something some day.

Remember, Vinny Sienna played at Amity and the Post 127 American Legion Baseball team, too — He’s with the Mets now.
