All bundled up, Dr. Bob braved the cold at last year’s BOW Relay for Life

To his patients in Milford, Dr. Robert Rauch was a good dentist with a not-so-hidden talent: he’s an excellent magician, putting young patients immediately at ease with a slight of hand or other clever trick before getting down to business. But when he learned he had cancer the only thing he could pull out of his hat was hope and courage, which he did for many years.

Rauch has been fighting cancer for several years and continues to have chemotherapy treatments even when there seemed to be little hope.  Even so, the disease did not keep him away from the BOW Relay for Life year after year.

Last year, in the coldest weather the Relay had ever seen, Rauch surprised everyone by coming to the fairgrounds for the opening ceremony. He had said he’d be there, but because of his condition, he wasn’t expected to make it.

The Committee made an exception for him by allowing him to give his speech before the first lap instead of waiting until the luminary ceremony.

Bob wore layers of clothing and was wearing a chemo pump as he told everyone not to give up, cracked a few jokes, as was his style and then led the survivor’s lap driving a golf cart with a grand marshal banner across the window.

Dr. Robert Rauch lost his battle with cancer today, and he will be sorely missed at the 2013 Relay for Life.
He was an inspiration and kept his positive attitude even in the worst of times.

Rest in Peace Dr. Bob and thank you for everything.
