The Amity Spartans Varsity Football Team played against the Harding Presidents in Woodbridge under the Friday night lights and the glow of the waning Gibbous moon with a full crowd in the stands. The Amity Army en masse, Dance Team looking sharp in new uniforms and our brand new cheerleading squad offering just the right amount of enthusiasm.

Coach Ted Czepiga must have been practicing the 2017 team hard. They came on strong, scoring the first (and second) touchdowns of the game, and holding onto their lead never letting Harding get too close.

A few standout Amity players were seniors Chris Butler, Luke Smith, Ryan Sabo, Matt Weidenfeller and kicker Jordan Conn.

IMG_8264Friday, Sept. 11, 2015 was the Amity Spartans Football team’s first game with new coach Ted Czepiga, and retired coach Bert Mozealous and several former Spartans were there to watch.  The Amity Army was in full force in the stands and the Amity Dance Team was ready to encourage that school spirit. Former Amity Football Player Ed Choiniere was in the announcers booth.

Going in, spirits were high. The team ran onto the field with senior tight end Ken Pero leading the way proudly carrying an American Flag.

IMG_8330Prior to the coin toss, members of the Orange, Woodbridge and Bethany Fire and Police Department honor guards marched onto the field in formation for a moment of silence in memory of the lives lost 14 years ago in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and then the Amity Band’s playing of the National Anthem. To everyone’s surprise a helicopter made a flyover just at the right moment.

Amity’s opponents for this match up was Daniel Hand Tigers from Madison.

In the first two quarters the Tigers had the upper “Hand” with two touchdowns. IMG_8391Junior fullback Nick Leone made the first TD with just 7:36 remaining in the first quarter. Junior kicker Pedro Sander made the extra point. The duo repeated this action in the second quarter with 5:14 left in the second quarter.

Halftime score 14 – 0 Hand

The Spartans came to life in the third quarter with junior running back Colin Beaulieu making an awesome 57 yard run for the team’s first touchdown. With famed former Amity kicker Lyle Luth watching from the sidelines, senior Jordan D’onofrio effortlessly made the extra point with 7:15 left in the quarter.

IMG_8626About four minutes later this duo tied the score, this time with Beaulieu dashing and dodging 84 yards to the goal line. D’onofrio’s kick was good and the Spartans had a good shot at a victory.

Third quarter score 14-14.

The Tigers pulled ahead again in the final quarter when sophomore wide receiver Mike Tarantino caught a pass in the very corner of the end zone and scored the team’s third TD, Sander stepped up to work his magic and brought the score to 21-14.

Sophomore running back Nate Palumbo also scored for the Tigers and Hand wins — 28-14.

The Amity Spartans (0-1) has an away conference game at Shelton (1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
