A message from Congregation Or Shalom:
On Saturday night, July 21, the Jewish world will observe the saddest day in our calendar, the Ninth Day of Av.  Known in Hebrew as Tisha B’Av, it marks the anniversary of the destruction of the ancient State of Israel.
(The scene here depicts the Holy Temple of Jerusalem going up in flames in the year 70, as Roman soldiers carry off the Temple’s golden Menorah.)
For two thousand years, our people tearfully prayed on Tisha B’Av for an end to Jewish homelessness and persecution.
The rebirth of the Jewish State, 70 years ago, however, signaled for many an end to our people’s exile and victimhood.  Modern Jews, therefore, often pray on Tisha B’Av for an end to global cruelty and inhumanity, as well as the advent, at last, of peace in the Holy Land.
