The Amity Spartans traveled to Bristol to play in the CIAC Class LL semifinal game against New Milford on Tuesday night.

After a 35 minute delay due to rumbles of thunder in the distance, the Spartans were ready to play ball.

Max Scheps took the mound and did what he does so well.

The game was scoreless after the first inning.

At the top of the second inning New Milford’s Austin Swanson walked with bases loaded, putting the Green Wave on the scoreboard, 1-0.

The Spartans weren’t about to lose this game. In the second inning Chris Winkel scored before the New Milford players won the battle of a rundown with another Spartan. Amity gained a 2-1 lead.

Spartans fans held their collective breath at the bottom of the fourth with two outs and the bases loaded, yet the score stayed at 2-1 Amity.

Nothing changed in the fifth, so in the sixth, Scheps struck out three. Then it was Amity’s turn.  With two outs, pinch hitter Rohan Patel (who has always come through in a pinch) batted an RBI single — 3-1 Amity.

Eli Oliphant relieved Scheps on the mound in the seventh and Amity is headed to its fourth consecutive CIAC Championship game.

NOTES: Our tried and true Amity wiley wabbit Andy Hague had a nice move scooting by the catcher, dodging his tag and scoring a run for the Spartans.

The Winkel brothers continue to show their skills, both in position on the field and at bat.

Every team needs a great shortstop and we’re fortunate to have Brian Ronai.

With the talents of pitchers Max Scheps and/or Eli Oliphant, Amity may make CIAC history this weekend.
