Scholarship recipients were honored at a reception on July 1: l. to r.: Alexandra Justo, Rev. Norman Brockett, pastor of Holy Infant Parish, Alexandra Ashworth, Thomas D’Orso, Susan D’Orso, Kevin Hadlock, Grace Whitman, Pat McCorkle, Robb McCorkle.

The Holy Infant Council of the Knights of Columbus (#12523) recently awarded its nineteenth annual scholarships, totaling $2,500, to three young members of Holy Infant parish in Orange.  The Knights administer the Father Killeen Scholarship Fund, which funds each of the scholarships.  The scholarship recipients were: Alexandra Ashworth, Grace Whitman, and Alexandra Justo.  Each of the scholarship applicants were judged on four criteria: community service, academic achievement in high school, character, and a personal essay.

Alexandra Ashworth, the daughter of Eric and Jacqueline Ashworth of Orange, was awarded the sixteenth annual Brian T. D’Orso Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of a Holy Infant parishioner and Amity High School student who demonstrated a particular devotion to community service before he perished in a tragic accident in November 2002.  Alexandra graduated from Amity Regional High School in June, and will be attending Vassar College, where she plans to major in either Psychology or Environmental Science.  Mr. and Mrs. D’Orso presented Ms. Ashworth with her scholarship.

Grace Whitman, daughter of Ed and Anne Whitman of Orange, received the Robb & Pat McCorkle Scholarship.  This is the fourteenth annual scholarship awarded in honor of a different member of the Holy Infant parish community each year, whose contribution to the parish and the community is honored.  Grace graduated from Amith High School in June, and she will be attending Providence College in the fall, where she will major in Accountancy.  The Robb & Pat McCorkle Scholarship was presented to Grace by Mr. & Mrs. McCorkle.

Alexandra Justo is the daughter of Robert and Kara Justo of Orange.  She received a scholarship presented by Holy Infant Council Grand Knight Kevin Hadlock. Alexandra graduated from Lauralton Hall this year, and she will be enrolled at Sacred Heart University this fall.  She plans to major in Social Work, with a minor in Catholic Studies.

The annual honoree scholarship is named to honor a member or members of Holy Infant parish who have contributed their time and talent significantly to their parish and community.  For 2018, Robb & Pat McCorkle were selected as the honorees.  Both of them have served Holy Infant parish and their community in many capacities. Among many of his endeavors, Robb has been a Trustee of Holy Infant Parish for nearly four years, served as Treasurer of the Holy Infant Knights of Columbus for 15 years, and he has been the Treasurer of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Assembly for 13 years. Both Robb & Pat are involved in helping count weekly contributions to the parish, and ensuring all data is recorded properly.  Pat has served as a President of the Parish Council, as a religious formation teacher for over 10 years, and as a member of the church choir and music ensemble for many years.  She is also very active with the Holy Infant Women’s Guild

The Holy Infant Knights of Columbus Council #12523 established the Father Killeen Scholarship Fund in 1999, in honor of the late Reverend Bernard Killeen, co-pastor of Holy Infant parish from 1982-1999, who passed away in 2010.  The scholarships funded by the Father Killeen Scholarship Fund are awarded on a competitive basis to any eligible young person who is a parishioner of Holy Infant Church, and who has distinguished him/herself academically, with high moral character and a strong record of community service.  To date, nearly $45,000 in scholarships has been awarded by the Fund to 59 deserving young men and women.
