Winter Athletes Grateful for Award Night Postponement

Amity Winter SportsA notice from Athletic Director Paul Mengold Wednesday afternoon was more than welcomed by parents and athletes alike.

The e-mail stated: “Just a reminder that the winter sports awards night was postponed from Wednesday March 26, to a new date of Thursday April 3 at 6:00.”

The original date was problematic for a few athletes as the Lacrosse try-outs fall on March 26th.

So many Amity students play more than one sport and, for example, Indoor Track and Hockey athletes who play Lacrosse would miss the awards night because the try-outs take place out of town the same evening (as the original date).

The parents and students thank Mengold for his understanding of this situation and for changing the awards to the later date.

Details:

Winter Sports Awards Night is being held on Thursday, April 3 at 6 p.m. in the gymnasium. All Athletes that participated in the Amity High School Winter Athletic Program are invited to attend along with their parent/guardian. ALL Athletes will be receiving an award.

Winter Sports include: Boys Basketball; Boys hockey; Boys Indoor Track, Boys Swimming; Wrestling; Girls Basketball; Girls Hockey; and Girls Indoor Track.

HOCKEY PICAmity Athletic Director Paul Mengold sent out the following notice to all parents of Amity Atheltes who participated in Winter sports teams.

You are cordially invited to attend the Amity High School Winter Sports Athletic Awards Night honoring your son/daughter on Wednesday, March 27, at 6:00 P.M. in the gymnasium.

Following the Welcome and Recognitions, parents and members of each team will meet in specified locations for the individual team awards to be presented to all team members by the coaches.

Student-athletes are reminded that this event is a moment to be proud of their accomplishments during the past season.  To help foster this spirit we ask that appropriate attire be worn, and that all athletes refrain from wearing hats to the ceremony.

Thank you for your continued support of the Amity Athletic Program, and we are looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday, March 27 at 6:00 P.M.

Wright’s Pond Still Providing Families A Place To Ice Skate

Sunday at the Pond

First Selectman Jim Zeoli did it, so did Selectman Judy Williams, and countless residents over the past century.

Wright’s Pond has been a favorite ice skating spot for Orange children and adults for decades.

Every winter signs are posted stating that the “ice is not safe” and you will “skate at your own risk.” But when the Park and Rec. Department measures the ice and it is thick enough, the rescue rope goes out and the larger sign still states “skate at your own risk” but the accompanying sign has the welcoming message that everyone waits for — “Ice Safe.”

On Sunday, hockey playing skaters respectfully keep a safe distance from wobbly legged novice skaters who venture out on the ice with their siblings and /or parents and everyone has a good time until the sun goes down.

As the weather changes and the ice thins with warmer temperatures be sure to heed the message on the sign. If it says “Not Safe” then a large crowd of energetic skaters will not provide the safest conditions on Wright’s Pond.

Have fun, but be safe.
