Park & Rec: Meeting Notes

New Park and Rec Commission member Dave Corris, blue shirt, seated, was introduced at the Aug. 22 meeting

The Aug. 22 Park and Recreation Commission meeting had plenty on the agenda.

New Member

The Commission has some newly appointed members. Last month, Jim Ronai attended his first meeting. On Wednesday, David Corris was introduced to the public.

Rental income

Park and Rec Director Dan Lynch reported that the department brought in $2,850 in the 2011-12 fiscal year and $1,050 so far in the current 2012-13 fiscal year.

“We purchased eight new picnic tables for the pavilion at a cost of $2,696,” he said.

The income from ball field use for 2011-12 was $13,450, yet, in the current fiscal year, which just began the intake is a mere $250.

Recycling Lids

In July, a representative from the Recycling Committee made a request for the same amount of recycling bins as there are garbage cans at High Plains and the playing fields.

The Recycling Lids that fit on the blue barrels around town were delivered and are now in storage. They will come out at the Orange Country Fair so when you attend the fair you will see 30 blue barrels: 15 will be used for trash and 15 will have recycling lids for cans and bottles.

Job Opening

Longtime Maintenance Supervisor Rich Cumpstone handed in his letter of resignation, stating he will retire on Aug. 31.

Lynch said Cumpstone will be sorely missed. “He was a big help to me during the transition period, when I was hired,” Lynch said.
“Thank you for your contributions to the town.”

The job has been posted on the town website.

Town Pool

The town pool is closed for routine maintenance. The old rug was pulled up and a new floor was installed in the lobby.

Eventually the pool will be heated by gas, but it hasn’t been hooked up yet.

Director’s Report

Lynch announced that the next Park and Rec Meeting will take place on Sept. 19 at High Plains Community Center in the Community Services Meeting Room. The change is due to the Jewish Holiday.

On the agenda is a representative from the Amity Regional Aquatic Club and a summer camp report from Scott Mandel.

Lynch said summer camp ended last Saturday

He extended his thanks to the entire staff for a successful summer.

Go to www.orange-ct.gov  to register for fall programs. Registration for Orange residents begins Sept 2.

Lynch also suggested that previously registered families update their information so the Park and Rec can send you current offerings.

Fall baseball and softball begins on Sept 8.

Fred Wolfe Park

In the Chairman’s Report, Joe Lembo said the plans for renovations on Fred Wolfe Park are progressing and Fuss and O’Neil have a lot of great ideas.

The Commission will seek out public input on the plans and they are confident that this will be a wonderful park that the entire community will enjoy.
