IMG_9769Every year the Amity Booster Club hosts the Block A Dinner (Athletic Awards) honoring individual Amity athletes for their exemplary work on – and off – the fields, courts and tracks – throughout the year.

Perhaps the most coveted award is that of Athlete of the Year, it is the final presentation of the evening and the only one whose recipients are a closely guarded secret, known only to the Athletic Director and his administrative assistant.

This year, two Orange residents, who honed their skills on the Orange Little League fields and became legendary on the Amity High School softball and baseball fields (and the Amity Basketball court), were named the male and female Athletes of the Year.

It is our pleasure to announce that Katie Koshes and Chris Winkel are this year’s Top Amity Athletes.

Both of them have proved their integrity, sportsmanship, talent and drive for the past four years and we are so happy that through all their success they remained humble and rejoiced in their fellow players’ accomplishments.

Katie and Chris represent everything that the Athlete of the Year should be — Congratulations!

Softball: Lady Spartans Battle But Come Up Short After Great Season

Katie Koshes on the mound.

Katie Koshes on the mound.

The Lady Spartans had an excellent (21-6) season, and once again, made it all the way to the Class LL State Championship game. This year, they had to face off against their SCC Rivals, the Cheshire Rams whom they’ve not been able to defeat in 2016.

The weather was better for the girls at 4 p.m. than for the boys, who had to play their first inning in the rain, then wait out a 2.5 hour rain delay in Middletown.

Our hometown girl, Katie Koshes, who honed her pitching skills in the Orange Little League and up, did a great job from the mound, striking out seven, walking four and allowing only six hits in 5.2 innings.

Morgan Perry relieved her at the end of the game.

The game was scoreless through the top of the fourth, then the Cheshire Rams got their ah-ha moment with four runs.

The final run came in the seventh inning, and Cheshire retained its perfect 27-0 season and clinched the state title, 5-0.

Our girls softball team has nothing to be ashamed of. They played some great ball this season, always kept their heads held high, demonstrated good sportsmanship and did everything together as a team — “There is no ‘I’ in TEAM.”

Thank You ladies for a great season.

The highlight of the April 11 Softball game at Amity was when catcher Teresa Marchitto hit one out of the park off of Sheehan’s Erin Dighello.

The Lady Spartans seem to be on a roll this year with their third win and tight teamwork with Katie Koshes on the mound and Marchitto behind the plate.

Besides her home run, Marchitto had an RBI, Jenna Thomas also had an RBI, and Koshes hit a double.

Sheehan’s Hunter Selvaggi hit a double, but that was about as well as the Titans did.

Amity scored in the second, third and sixth innings, defeating Sheehan 3-0

Records: Amity 3-0 (1-0 SCC Housatonic Division); Sheehan 0-2 (0-1).

Congratulations Katie, you’ve always made us proud and we know you will continue to do so.

Safe at second.

Safe at second.

When two very talented softball teams meet up for the second time in a season, the drive to win is so strong you can feel it in the air.

On April 27, Amity lost to the Cheshire Rams 8-1 in Cheshire, so this time around, at Old Tavern Park in Orange, would it be The Lady Spartans’ turn?

The first five innings were scoreless, and there was hope for Amity. But then at the top of the sixth, Cheshire came alive scoring 8 runs, which included two home runs.

Amity came close a couple of times, but just couldn’t seem to score in this battle.

Katie Koshes and Morgan Perry shared pitching duty in this important game.

Once again, Cheshire won, this time 8-0, and retained its perfect season record, 15-0, while Amity dropped to 12-4.

IMG_9916If anyone deserves an MVP nod for her performance in a game it would be Amity Katie Koshes who bunted the ball on her first pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning against South Windsor in the 2-1 CIAC semi-final win in West Haven.

Koshes was a master on the mound keeping the Bobcats down to just two hits and allowing four walks, but she struck out 16.

With the score tied at 1-1, and the Lady Spartans up at bat, it was important to make the right decisions if Amity was going to get into the Class LL state championship game this weekend.

Heather Watt singled to left field with one out in the bottom of the seventh. She stole second on a passed ball, and on to third on a ground out.

With two outs, and Watt in position, Koshes bunted and safely ran to first, allowing Watt to score the winning run.

Notes:

Jenna DiLorenzo walked in the second inning after she was hit by a pitch. She stole second and then scored on a single by Jill DeMaio.

Krista Reynolds had a single and triple for the Lady Spartans.

In the third, the Bobcats’ Linda Nguyen scored on a single by Miread Kelly.

Amity will play for the title against Southington in the Championship game this weekend (time and location to be announced)

The two teams have faced off for the title seven times, with Amity taking the last three.

Amity is the #7 seed with a  22-5 record.
