Amity Grad Mike Choiniere (’12), who played with his brothers and former teammates in the Lacrosse Alumni game on Sunday, has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III At-Large Third Team.

Choiniere, of the Albertus Magnus men’s lacrosse team, who has a 4.0 GPA in Communications at Albertus, led the Falcons with 75 points in 2015 on 52 goals and 23 assists.

Choiniere, a 2015 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) All-Conference First Team selection, was ranked third in the nation in points per game (5.36) and fourth in goals per game (3.71).

He was tagged as a member of the 2015 GNAC All-Academic Team and was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District Team for Division III District 2.

Most recently, he was selected to the 2015 New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) East-West All-Star Game after leading the GNAC in points this past season.

Choiniere is just the second-ever Academic All-American for Albertus Magnus College following women’s basketball standout Lianna Carrero (Hamden) who earned the prestigious recognition in both 2013 and 2014.

Coach Brandon Pepe could not have been more proud of his team.

“This was a great win for us as Guilford has a great lacrosse program, and are always a very well coached team,” Pepe said. “Our goalie, James Chapman, was unbelievable in net. He made a few very difficult saves early on, and the defense rallied behind him. This was a great display of Amity lacrosse today.”

Amity Winter SportsA notice from Athletic Director Paul Mengold Wednesday afternoon was more than welcomed by parents and athletes alike.

The e-mail stated: “Just a reminder that the winter sports awards night was postponed from Wednesday March 26, to a new date of Thursday April 3 at 6:00.”

The original date was problematic for a few athletes as the Lacrosse try-outs fall on March 26th.

So many Amity students play more than one sport and, for example, Indoor Track and Hockey athletes who play Lacrosse would miss the awards night because the try-outs take place out of town the same evening (as the original date).

The parents and students thank Mengold for his understanding of this situation and for changing the awards to the later date.

Details:

Winter Sports Awards Night is being held on Thursday, April 3 at 6 p.m. in the gymnasium. All Athletes that participated in the Amity High School Winter Athletic Program are invited to attend along with their parent/guardian. ALL Athletes will be receiving an award.

Winter Sports include: Boys Basketball; Boys hockey; Boys Indoor Track, Boys Swimming; Wrestling; Girls Basketball; Girls Hockey; and Girls Indoor Track.
