This coming Saturday, the Case Memorial Library will not be open, nor will it be open ANY Saturday during the Month of August, based on a decision by the Library Commission.

At its last meeting, the Library Commission discussed the staffing shortage and decided that the best way to offer residents with quality services Monday – Friday, the best thing they could do is cut out Saturdays for the month of August.

Library Director Meryl Farber said, “The library has several unfilled positions and it’s impossible to stay open six days a week until those positions are filled. We have some wonderful trained volunteers, but the staff consists of professionals with masters degrees and trained paraprofessionals.”

The Board of Selectmen is aware of the staffing issue and they are prepared to try to remedy the situation as soon as possible.

First Selectman Jim Zeoli said, “Two positions are up for discussion at our Board meeting in two weeks. Two assistants dropped out because of low pay and no benefits. We will be talking about those positions and perhaps a third in our personnel portion of the meeting.”

Discussions regarding personnel issues always are held in executive session.

“We hope to have this resolved by the end of August,” he said.
