On Thursday, March 2, the Orange Volunteer Fire Department responded to an accident on the Wilbur Cross Parkway to extricate two men from a plumbing van crushed by a huge 50,000 pound pine tree that came down during a storm with extremely heavy wind gusts.

The business owner, Chris Scofield and his business partner both were injured.

The pine tree was partially resting on Scofield’s chest.

While his partner is recovering at home, Scofield, the father of two young sons, won’t be home for at least two months. He suffered multiple fractures in his spine and a neck fracture. Scofield’s many injuries will lead to multiple surgeries according to his family. This comes just six months after he beat cancer.

He is currently in Yale New Haven Hospital in the Trauma Unit.  He will be there for at least another 10-14 days, according to his wife, Lisa.  After that, because they live in a third floor apartment, he won’t be able to go home.

He has to go to a rehab facility for another 4-8 weeks, possibly more.

“Our two little boys are confused and scared one minute, then they’re ok the next.  I know as the days go by, it’s going to get harder for them not to see him,” Lisa said. “All this weighs heavily on me, and I do not want Chris to have to worry about anything right now.  He is our sole financial provider.  We agreed even before we got engaged that if we got married, I would stay home and raise our children.”

The accident may result in financial ruin for Chris Scofield’s family and their small plumbing business, A&S Mechanical of Shelton, with hospital stays, surgeries and rehabilitation ahead. This family just can’t seem to catch a break.

Lisa’s car broke down twice while she rushing to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

How You Can Help

If you’d like to assist the family, here are a couple of ways that you can help: A GoFundMe has been set up and tomorrow, Wednesday, March 29, Orange resident Carol Gloria is opening the bar area of her restaurant La Famiglia Vincenzo, 1573 Boston Post Road, Milford for its popular Guest Bartender event from 6-9 p.m.

Lisa Lion and Laura are Guest Bartending and have the opportunity to serve drinks for a great cause — raising money to help the Scofield family during this difficult time.

Laura and Lisa will be donating their tips to this cause. Come down and show your support. You can even order the drink of the night: a “ScofieldStrong.”
