The exact time of this month’s full moon is at 5:43 p.m. today, May 10.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, we use Full Moon names that were used during Native American and Colonial times to help track the seasons. Depending on the tribe, May’s Full Moon was called the Full Flower Moon as well as Mother’s Moon, Milk Moon, and Corn Planting Moon.

The May Moon marked a time of increasing fertility, with temperatures warm enough for safely bearing young, a near end to late frosts, and plants in bloom.

The Full Flower Moon will be at its peak Saturday, May 21 at 5:14:30 p.m., just before the BOW Relay For Life Opening Ceremony.

Not only will the moon shine bright on the Orange Fairgrounds, but we’re in for an additional treat: Mars will be the closest to earth in quite some time and very visible this weekend. Check out the full moon, then look up and to the right, and find what looks like a bright red star.

Where did the name come from? According to the Farmer’s Almanac May’s full moon is the Full Flower Moon because, in most areas, flowers are abundant everywhere during this time. Thus, the name of this Moon. Other names include the Full Corn Planting Moon, or the Milk Moon.
