Andrea Jacobson Grant, 77, of Orange, passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018. Born in Providence on July 6, 1940, Andrea was the eldest child of the late Eric Gunnar Jacobson and Mary Elizabeth (Grieve) Jacobson. The family moved to Westerly in 1950 after purchasing a former physical therapy clinic on the Shore Road and converting it to an inn known as the Winnapaug House (later the Grandview).

She graduated from Westerly High School in 1958. She served as class secretary, editor-in-chief of the Driftwood (yearbook), a member of the Barker staff (school newspaper), and a member of the cheering squad. She was inducted into the Rhode Island and National Honor Societies and received the D. A. R. Award for Good Citizenship. Classmates voted her most likely to succeed, most mature, and most respected.

Andrea attended Pembroke College (now Brown University) and graduated in 1962 with a major in English. Work and family took her to western New York, Florida, Pennsylvania and Maryland before she returned to New England in the early 1980s. For most of her professional life, she worked as a teacher of children with special needs, many of them autistic.

Andrea read voraciously and regularly attended movies. She maintained elaborate flower gardens, and among her culinary skills was her fine-tuning of Rhode Island clam chowder, the “real” kind without milk, cream or tomatoes. Perhaps her greatest love was East Beach, where she spent many an afternoon throughout her life.

Andrea is survived by her brothers, Kent A. Jacobson (Martha Lyon) of Northampton, MA, and Peter L. Jacobson (Terry Lorant) of Oakland, CA; daughters Lisa Hartjen of Honsdale, PA, and Anne Hartjen (Larry Laconi) of New Haven, CT; two grandchildren, James and Elizabeth Laconi; and first husband, Raymond Hartjen of East Hampton, NY. She was predeceased by her second husband, John Grant.

Contributions may be made in memory of Andrea Jacobson Grant to the Westerly Public Library, 44 Broad Street, Westerly, RI, 02891.
