A local pet store was the victim of a possible break-in at 3 a.m. Friday morning and Orange Police are working to put the pieces together as to a motive.

The manager of PetSmart at 55 Boston Post Road (next to Best Buy) said someone in a van backed into the front doors of the store, which broke the glass, but did not damage the interior doors.

He said the security alarm sounded and must have scared the driver off before he could get out of the van. The suspect did not enter the store and the only damage was to the front door.

PetSmart has been opening at 8 a.m., one hour earlier than usual during the holiday season, and the staff was able to clean up the mess and open on time this morning.

Assistant Police Chief Max Martins said the OPD is treating the incident as an attempted break-in, but it’s still too early in the investigation to come to any conclusion

IMG_1596If you’ve driven on Lambert Road lately, you may have noticed the speed trailer on the side of the road.

Although speed trailers are nothing new in Orange, there’s something different about this one.

For years Orange has shared a trailer with Woodbridge and Bethany and it was placed in each town on a rotating basis.

This trailer was a donation from Dichello Distributors — it belongs solely to Orange and has been in operation for one week.

At Monday’s Police Commission meeting, Chief Robert Gagne called it a great piece of equipment. The Police Department can program messages on it. For example, if you are going the speed limit you will see something like “Thanks For Driving Safely” on the screen as you pass by.

Orange Police: Tips for Winter Storms

Snow-Plow1The Orange Police Department released this list of tips to remember when winter storms hit the area.

• Vehicles should not be parked on Public streets, even if not prohibited to do so. Keeping streets clear of parked vehicles will expedite road clearing.

• Do not leave snow piles in the road when clearing driveways. This makes for a dangerous hazard for vehicles on the roadways.

• Adjust your speed for bad weather. Vehicles can slide on slippery surfaces. Always slow down on snow covered roads and increase following distances between your car and others on the roadway. Remember, your 4 wheel drive car or truck wont stop any quicker than others on the roadway.

• Avoid unnecessary travel during snow events.

Your Highway Department will be out clearing streets as soon as the storm hits.
