Juliette Elaine Winfield Downes Arena, 91, of Orange passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday September 27, 2017.

She was born in Bridgeport, August 20, 1926, daughter of the late Francis L. Winfield and Julia McQuillan Winfield. She was the loving mother of Audrey Downes Geer and mother in law of Timothy Geer of Orange and cherished grandmother of her beloved grandson, Patrick William Geer.

Elaine also is survived by her brother Francis E. (Anne) Winfield of San Diego, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 18 years, William F. Downes in 1974, and her husband of 25 years, Richard F. Arena in 2000. She was also predeceased by her sister Jane Winfield Danaher and her brothers, David V. Winfield, Thomas W. Winfield and Ronald V. Winfield.

Elaine was a graduate Albertus Magnus College, Class of 1949, with a BA Degree in Economics. After graduation, she worked in New York for the Union Labor Life Insurance Company as an actuarial assistant and later was a statistical analyst for the Olin Mathieson Corporation. She was the assistant to Advertising Directors of WNHC-TV (now WTNH) Channel 8 and also the Sound Scriber Corporation. She created many ads for the New York edition of TV Guide.

For 22 years she was Finance Manager for the Town of Orange Visiting Nurse Association. After retirement she was a dedicated volunteer for many years, most notably as an IRS-AARP income tax preparer for the City of West Haven Senior Center. Also she had assisted the Town of Orange VNA at their blood pressure clinics for many years.

Admired by many for sense of style and for her sewing talents, she designed and created wedding veils for her daughter and two nieces. Elaine was a charter member of the Town of Orange Veteran’s War Remembrance Memorial Committee. She was a member of Holy Infant Church Women’s Guild. Elaine’s interests included water color painting, sketching, sewing and compiling the family tree. She will be missed by her loving extended family and many friends.

The hours for visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green.

Her funeral procession will leave the funeral home Monday morning at 9:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 in Holy Infant Church.

Interment will follow in Orange Center Cemetery. Elaine’s family would like to thank her family and friends who shared concern and prayers for Elaine over the past three years. Also, a heartfelt thank you to her wonderful caregivers, Julia, Mayvis and Linda and her beloved nurse and friend Maria Biondi.
