The Broadway Boys, a collection of the hottest male voices direct from the New York stage, headlines the Jamie A. Hulley Arts Foundation’s 16th Annual Evening for the Arts Gala Benefit on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at Fairfield University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

The performance is part of The Evening for the Arts Gala, benefitting the Jamie A. Hulley Arts Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the educational enrichment and professional development of young artists and early career professionals, created in the memory of Orange, Conn. resident Jamie Alaine Hulley.

The performance begins at 7 p.m. and is preceded by an Evening for the Arts reception at 6 p.m., which includes complimentary wine and beer, a dessert bar and silent and live auctions. Tickets are available through the Quick Center Box Office: (203) 254-4010, or toll-free 1-877-ARTS-396. Tickets are $45 in advance or $50 at the door.

The Broadway Boys features six handsome, talented vocalists who have performed in the biggest hits on Broadway including Hamilton, Rent, Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, The Lion King, Kinky Boots, and many more.  Their set list features classic and contemporary Broadway hits presented in a fresh, new way by adding elements of Pop, Funk, Gospel and Jazz.  Their captivating harmonies truly transports their audience to “a new Broadway.” In addition to their extensive New York City stage credits, The Broadway Boys have toured nationally across the U.S. and throughout Europe.  In addition to two studio albums, “The Lullaby of Broadway” and “Hark!” The Broadway Boys are about to release a third entitled, “A New Broadway,” which will feature the iconic song, For Good from Broadway’s smash hit, Wicked, dedicated to Jamie.

“A Broadway Boys performance is like an exhilarating journey through eight decades of musical theater all rolled into one spectacular evening.” said Judy Primavera, co-founder and president of the Jamie Hulley Arts Foundation. “There is something for everyone—excellent entertainment, yummy desserts, and a wide array of ‘must have’ auction and raffle items to bring home.”  There are chances to win Delta skybox seats to the red-hot Yankees vs. Blue Jays, September 14 game, theatre tickets, sports & Marvel comics memorabilia, gift cards, spa packages, and baskets of goodies.

The Gala also showcases the talents of young aspiring performers involved in the foundation’s programs at Square Foot Theatre in Wallingford, Amity High School’s Creative Theatre, and Broadway Method Academy in Fairfield. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening is Jared Andrew Brown, Artistic Director of Square Foot Theatre with Amity Creative Theatre’s Rob Kennedy & Kimberly Jenna Simon, and Broadway Method Academy’s Connor Deane & J. Scott Handley serving as co-hosts.

The Jamie A. Hulley Arts Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the educational enrichment and professional development of young artists and early career professionals, was founded to celebrate the life of Orange, Conn. resident Jamie Alaine Hulley. All proceeds from the Gala are dedicated to scholarships, educational programs and grants in the arts throughout Connecticut especially in the greater New Haven and Fairfield counties.  Since the foundation’s creation in 2002, nearly $800,000 in scholarships and grants have been awarded which have touched the lives of thousands of area youth each year.

Saturday’s Carnival highlights

Bicycle winners Cyrilla and Paul with Asst. Fire Chief Charles Sherwood.

Saturday is always a big day for kids at the Orange Volunteer Firemen’s Carnival. For as far back as I can remember, the Saturday matinee is when the Fire Department draws the winning tickets for the free bicycle raffle.

This year’s lucky winners were Paul from Milford and Cyrilla from West Haven.
The afternoon weather was perfect and it just got better as the day went on.
One of the hot spots was the fried dough booth under the pavilion and Eli’s restaurant tent also found a lot of fans.
The OVFD always manages to reel in celebrity announcers, Radio personality Brian Smith has been volunteering for a few years and this afternoon some were surprised to hear the smooth and familiar voice of former tv newsman Leon Collins, now a Legislative Representative for the Connecticut State Firefighters Association.
The annual fundraising event ends tomorrow, (Sunday) at 5 p.m.
If you have purchased your discount-priced ride bracelets online, when you arrive at the fairgrounds, go directly to the rear of the raffle tent (across from the pavilion ‘Main Food Tent’) to pick up your wristbands, and have your ID ready.

You may use your wristbands on Sunday, Aug. 6 from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

Remember, children must be at least 3-feet tall to ride any ride.

You can still buy regular priced tickets at the carnival.

This is the 89th annual Firemen’s carnival and this year the goal of the department’s largest fundraiser is to raise $850,000 to purchase a 75-foot ladder truck with the capability of reaching the tall buildings in town.

Don’t forget to buy your raffle tickets for a chance to win one of 11 prizes which, this year, are:

  1. $7,000 Visa Gift Card – People’s Bank
  2. $4,000 Gift Card – Travelers Choice, 236 Boston Post Road, Orange, CT
  3. $2,500 Gift Certificate – Anytime Fitness, 560 Boston Post Road, Orange, CT (Orange, CT Location Only)
  4. $2,000 Visa Gift Card – People’s Bank
  5. $1,200 Gift Certificate – Diamond Designs, 500 Boston Post Road, Orange, CT
  6. Apple iPad Air 2, 16GB, Best Buy, 53 Boston Post Road, Orange, CT
  7. $400 Gift Card – ShopRite, 935 Boston Post Road, Milford, CT
  8. $350 Gift Card – Chip’s Family Restaurant, 321 Boston Post Road, Orange, CT
  9. $250 Gift Card – Knights, Inc., 286 Boston Post Road, Orange, CT
  10. $200 Gift Card – Exxon Quick Stop, 404 Boston Post Road, Orange, CT
  11. Gift Certificate to Yale New Haven Open at Yale Tennis Tournament

Tickets are just $5 each and can be purchased at the main raffle tent across from the pavilion.

The drawing is on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at the Orange Fairgrounds, 525 Orange Center Road. No, you do not have to be present to win.

Nighttime fun at the Orange Firemen’s Carnival

The highly anticipated annual family event of the year begins tonight at 5 p.m.

The Orange Volunteer Firemen’s Carnival is set up and ready to roll at the Orange Fairgrounds, 525 Orange Center Road with about 20 thrilling rides from Rockwell Amusements for children and adults alike.

The carnival runs from 5 to 11 p.m. on Thursday.

There are many rides, games, and food options at the carnival, and everyone has their favorite, but did you know that the Fire Department only benefits from the proceeds at the games and food that they run?

The games are the Frog Bog, Dunk Tank, High Striker, Speedball and Blower ball – the little game of chance next to the raffle tent. The 50/50 raffle benefits both the civilian winner and the fire department, who split the pot a couple of times a day.

The main food tent (under the pavilion) and the satellite food tent straight up the aisle next to the fence on Orange Center Road also are Fire Department run.

Of course, you can’t beat $5 for a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of 11 great prizes, including a $7,000 Visa Gift Card, $4,000 Gift Card, $2,500 Gift Certificate – Anytime Fitness, $2,000 Visa Gift Card, $1,200 Gift Certificate – Diamond Designs, Apple iPad Air 2, 16GB, Best Buy, $350 Gift Card – Chip’s Family Restaurant, $300 Gift Card – Trader Joe’s, $250 Gift Card – Knights, Inc., $200 Gift Card – Ben’s Service Center, Gift Certificate to Yale New Haven Open at Yale Tennis Tournament.

Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 12.02.09 PMThe Orange Volunteer Fire Association is on duty 24/7/365. The men and women are highly trained just like the paid firefighters in some nearby cities. They depend upon fundraisers like the annual four-day carnival to bring in money for training, equipment and apparatus.

The Orange Volunteer Fire Department has been working on the 2016 carnival since the day after the 2015 carnival ended.

Parking and admission are always free.

It takes a lot of planning to keep such a big operation rolling every year, keeping the public interested in coming and finding volunteer non-firefighters willing to help in the food tent and pitch in at various games around the fairgrounds.

Recently, Denise Mirto sent a shout-out for food tent volunteers  and really can use your help mostly on Saturday day & night shifts and Sunday during the day.

Under the Raffle Tent you will find many familiar faces, selectmen, various committee and board members and residents who come back year after year and donate their time to the fire department, just as the firefighters donate their time to the town every hour of every day.

Several years ago, First Selectman Jim Zeoli called the Carnival the “cheapest fire insurance that an Orange Resident can have.”

“If every household spent a couple hundred bucks at the carnival, it is the cheapest insurance they can have for fire service,” Zeoli said. “If we had a paid Fire Department it would cost us millions of dollars every year.”

Carrie is a brave young woman who battled cancer, had a double mastectomy, hysterectomy and to add insult to injury the bank foreclosed on her home while she was in treatment.

Every day is a struggle for Carrie and her daughter Rylee as Carrie tries to get back on her feet.

Carrie is blessed to have won her battle with cancer, and to have many caring friends who have rallied around her and arranged for this fundraiser with Ale House owner Jim Hassenmayer.

“This is one of the most worthy causes we’ve ever been asked to help here,” Hassenmayer said. “If anyone needs help, it’s Carrie. I can’t imagine how hard this has been on her. I really want this one to be a huge success.”

The event will include  food, entertainment, dancing, drink specials, door prizes, and free Bud Light Drafts from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Carrie’s friend, Kendra Montano, one of the organizers said, ” There are awesome Raffle Prizes: Apple MacBook Pro, Ipad Mini, 32″ HDTV, 19″ HDTV, Garmin GPS, Nikon Digital Camera, HiSense Tablet, Headphones, UGG Wear, and lots of Gift Certificates for local stores, restaurants, and other businesses that include: Jimmy’s Apizza, Massage Envy, DSW, Macy’s, Oyster River Tavern, Kelly’s on Campbell, Lorenzo’s Restaurant, Jenn and Jan’s Deli, Antonio’s Restaurant, New Century Salon, Hair House Salon, and Studio D salon.”

On her Facebook Page, Carrie posted the following:

“I am lost for words for what Kendra and Jim  have taken their time out of their hectic schedules and done for me. Their concern and amazing hearts have brought back my faith in people. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have as much faith, hope, and feel optimistic as I used to. Thank you both for bringing the fight back to me and giving me my fortitude back! God bless you both! No words can express how grateful I am for the both of you!”
