The Amity Wrestling team competed in the Class L State Wrestling Tournament on Friday, February 16 and Saturday, February 17 at Bristol Central High School.

With a young squad of wrestlers and only three seniors in the starting lineup, Amity set a goal to place in the top ten teams in the Class L Tournament. With the tournament spanning two days, wrestlers need to be both mentally and physically ready to compete in this long and arduous competition.

After the first day, Amity had seven wrestlers advance to the round of 16.

Junior Cole Johnson and Freshman Josh Foote had crucial victories for the Spartans to help add to their team point total. Saturday saw Christian Chadwick, Aiden Hebert, Matt Rothman, Sam Keylock and Justin Griffin continue to win and advance to the state open qualifying rounds.

Senior Captain Matt Rothman advanced to the finals in the 152lbs. weight class eventually losing a hard-fought match 4-3. Junior Justin Griffin wrestled his way back to win third place in the 285 lbs. weight class. Senior Captains Christian Chadwick (113 lbs.) and Sam Keylock (160 lbs.) placed fifth along with Sophomore Aiden Hebert who also placed fifth at 120 lbs.

Head Coach Ryan Roddy said “Coach Todd Patterson, Coach Nate Shilling and I are thrilled with how well our team wrestled this weekend. We exceeded our goal by placing 8th as a team. Individually we had 5 medal winners; Matt Rothman placed 2nd, Justin Griffin placed 3rd and Christian Chadwick, Aiden Hebert, and Sam Keylock each placed 5th. We are excited to see what these 5 wrestlers can do this coming weekend at the State Open Tournament in New Haven. I believe each wrestler has unfinished business and will look to exceed his Class L placement.”

All five of these wrestlers qualified for the State Open Championships on Friday, February 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Floyd Little Center in New Haven.
