On Friday, Aug. 16, local firefighters and legislators were present at a ceremony in the Governor’s Office at the Capitol where Governor Dannel P. Malloy signed a bill that will allow fire departments to conduct a boot drive on state highways.

Following is a press release from State Rep. Themis Klarides:

State Rep. Themis Klarides (R-114) along with local firefighters, joined Governor Dannel P. Malloy as he signed a bill that will make it easier for firefighters to conduct charitable fundraisers.

The new law allows fire departments to conduct “fill-the-boot” fundraisers on state highways, which was previously prohibited.

“The previous policy on ‘fill-the-boot’ drives was well intentioned, but enforced inconsistently and didn’t make much sense as many state highways are safe for hosting roadside events,” Rep. Klarides said. “We should be encouraging and supporting our hardworking volunteer firefighters who sacrifice every day to make our communities safer – and this law accomplishes that. I’m so pleased the Derby and Orange Fire Departments could join me today in celebrating this change in policy that will help them achieve their fundraising goals.”

The measure was prompted by an incident when Derby firefighters were ordered to end a fundraiser because it took place on a state road.
