On April 12, 2014 at 1:28 p.m. the Orange Fire Department was dispatched to 630 Grassy Hill Road for a report of a body in the lake. Upon arriving firefighters were informed by police officers on scene that there was a body approximately 15 feet off shore and requested that fire personnel to remove the body and bring it to the shore.
Under the direction of Incident commander Asst. Chief Sherwood and Operations Officer Captain Dan Cole, Lieutenant Drew Pananpada, and Firefighters Bill Laudenslager, Daniel Abrams, and Justin Sansone entered the water wearing cold water exposure suits and secured the body to a backboard and stokes basket and brought the body to the shore for the police investigation. Past Chief Charles Gagel and Firefighter Lisa Kaplan assisted from the shore by keeping the rescuers safe by securing them using safety rope.
For their actions of performing a difficult task while putting themselves in jeopardy to extricate the body, Lieutenaant Panapada and firefighters Laudenslager, Abrams, and Sansone are being awarded Commendations.
For their actions of assisting firefighters to safely perform a difficult task, Past Chief Gagel and Firefighter Kaplan are being awarded unit citations.
