Kyle Mattei both hit and pitched well for Orange Post 127, but it wasn’t enough as Orange Post 127 fell to Hamden 9-6 at Brinley Field on Friday.
Mattei had two extra-base hits for Orange Post 127. He doubled in the fourth and sixth innings.
Mattei was in control on the rubber. Mattei held Hamden hitless over one-third of an inning, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out none.
Rodriguez got the win for Hamden despite allowing six runs over seven innings. He struck out nine, walked five and surrendered seven hits.
Mike Stewart couldn’t get it done on the hill for Orange Post 127, taking a loss. He allowed nine runs in 6 2/3 innings, walked six and struck out three.
In the bottom of the first, Orange Post 127 grabbed the early lead, 1-0. Orange Post 127’s rally started when Matt Ronai singled. A stolen base then moved Ronai from first to second. Pat Winkel singled, scoring Ronai.
Hamden got two-run rallies in the third inning and the seventh. In the third, Hamden scored on an error, plating Shugrue.
The game was never in doubt after the fourth, as Hamden scored four runs on a two-run double by Magson and an RBI single by Colon.
Four runs in the bottom of the sixth helped Orange Post 127 close its deficit to 7-6. An RBI single by Max Scheps and a three-run double by Mike Appel fueled Orange Post 127’s comeback. Rodriguez ended the inning by getting Ronai to strike out.
Hamden built upon its lead with two runs in the seventh. A clutch scored Mascintonio to open the scoring in the frame.
