IMG_0578The Amity Spartans football team is getting better with every game and Saturday’s home non-conference loss to the Wilbur Cross  Governors was a nail-biter.

First Quarter

The Governors started things off in a big way with two consecutive touchdowns and extra points with just 2:27 remaining in the first quarter.  16-0

Second Quarter

The Spartans got onto the scoreboard at 9:20 in second quarter with a touchdown and the kick was good.

Still Wilbur Cross wanted to show them who was boss, and the Governor’s scored again with just 3:58 remaining in the quarter, but they failed to make the extra point.

The big blow came as the clock ran out on the first half — as the Governors made another touchdown with :00 left to go, bringing the halftime score to 28-7.

Third Quarter

Call them the comeback kids, the Spartans made their second touchdown at 7:29 and the kick was good in the third quarter.

They followed that up with another touchdown with 3:54 remaining in the quarter, closing the deficit to 28-20.

Fourth Quarter

At 9:01 the Spartans made a touchdown, closing the deficit to 28-26 in 4th quarter

The final quarter had so much back and forth with each team getting possession of the ball, often giving false hope as they drew closer to the goal lines.

The last 6 seconds provided the perfect nail-biting opportunity as the Spartans opted for a two point conversion play to tie up the game, unfortunately that didn’t pan out.

Wilbur Cross won by two points — 28-26.

On Friday, Oct. 16 Amity (0-4-0)  is on the road at Fairfield Prep at 6 p.m.
