After a couple of losses, the Amity Spartans Boys Hockey Team hosted the Daniel Hand Tigers in West Haven on Wednesday night.
It wasn’t the fastest, fanciest or technically impressive game we’ve seen this season, but what we saw on the scoreboard in the end sure was sweet.
The first period was a busy back and forth between the rivals, but not what could be described as a “flurry”.
Near the end, with a little more than a minute remaining Eli Gregory (#15) scored the first goal, assisted by AJ Capecelatro (#16). Making it 1-0 Amity.
The second period was much of the same, both teams shooting, with no additional scoring until the Spartan’s Cam Delvecchio (#12) made a move and struck an unassisted goal in past Hand’s Goalie Alex Lumpkin at 12:07.
2-0 Amity.
Hand’s Head Coach Brian Gonsalves, (who once worked shoulder-to-shoulder on the Amity coaching staff with Mike Richetelli) must have had a come to God speech with his team during the break because the Tigers entered the ice with a new attitude in the third period.
Hand’s Kevin Rich (#8) slipped one in past Amity goalie Aiden Courtney at 3:56, finally getting the Tigers on the scoreboard. (2-1 Amity)
But their celebration didn’t last long. Less than a minute later, at 4:52 the Spartans answered, with Capcelatro scoring off an assist from Gregory and Michael Page (#20).
As the clock ticked down, Gonsalves pulled the goalie, giving Amity’s Delvecchio the opportunity to easily score his second unassisted goal, this time on an empty net, at 13:25.
The Spartans celebrated their 4-1 victory.
Saves: Amity 27, Hand 32
Record: Amity is now 4-4 for the season.
Next up is a tough battle against Guilford at the East Haven High School Veterans Rink on Saturday Jan. 14 at 3:15. Guilford is a powerhouse team with a 7-1 season record.
Put your game faces on Amity, show them what you’ve got.
