Saturday’s Relay for Life opening ceremony was memorable with a special tribute to Amity Hockey Coach Gary Lindgren, who’s battled cancer for the past 8 months, from his current high school team and former players.

Awards were presented to last year’s teams that earned the most money for the American Cancer Society, as well as a new award for the team that showed the most character and determination as the late Dr. Robert Rauche an inspiration to all who knew him.

When the ceremony was over, Lindgren took his place in a golf cart driven by Relay co-chairman Debby Davis and they led the survivors and caregivers lap around the track of the Orange Fairgrounds.

Each of the teams were introduced and began their laps, walking throughout the night, raising money to help fight cancer.

Come to the High Plains Community Center tonight between 5-8 p.m. for the Relay for Life meeting.

As the May 31 Relay date approaches, tonight is an important meeting where Team Leaders turn in  their forms and other important materials.

The leaders (George Geane and Debby Davis) are all asking that on the day of Relay every team member brings in three (3) canned items.

The cans will be used to hold down the luminary bags and then they will be donated to the food back in your names. Must be canned items not boxed items
