It’s been a long season, but we are almost there, the Amity Spartans Baseball team shut out Fairfield Ludlowe 12-0 today in Woodbridge.

It was like a nice autumn day up on the hill, windy and cloudy – perfect baseball weather. The only ones sweating it out were the Falcons.

The game got off to a slow start with no score in the first inning.

Second inning — Ludlowe failed to score again, but Amity came alive. Colin Beaulieu and Pat Winkel brought in runners on walks and Andy Hague brought one in on a single. 3-0 Amity

Third inning — 0 for Ludlowe. Beaulieu walked and Amity scored a run. Hague hit a two-run single, Jack Nolan hit a two-run triple and Max Scheps had a one-run single. 9-0 Amity

No action in the fourth.

Fifth inning — Nolan had a one-run triple and Scheps had a one-run single. (Somewhere in there another run came in). 12-0 Amity

And that was all she wrote, neither team scored after that and Amity advances in the tournament.

Athletic Director Ernie Goodwin tweeted: “Spartans win their 27th consecutive postseason game, head back to LL semifinals.”

The Lady Spartans ended their season today in Stamford, but they had a really good run.

Amity Shuts Out Sheehan

On Friday, Amity hosted the Sheehan Titans in Woodbridge.
Max Scheps pitched this one and did a fine job. The Spartans shut out the Titans 10-0.
In the first inning, the Titans’ center fielder went after a fly ball, hit the fence, and crumpled to the ground. His teammates, Amity players and the Amity trainer ran to his assistance as the left and right fielders yelled, “we need a towel!” The boy reportedly cut his face up, but never lost consciousness. He should be alright, and we wish him well.

Sheehan 000 000 0  —  0   6 5

Amity       314  003 X — 11 12 0

IMG_0891The #1 seeded Amity Spartans Baseball team played a nearly flawless game at Whitey Piurek Field (West Haven High School) today and set a new record high score for an SCC Championship Game with a 17-0 victory over #3 seeded Notre Dame of West Haven. (The previous high, made twice by Amity, once by Cheshire, was 14).

Two very important elements to the Spartans’ championship win were the Hague brothers, second-baseman Andy (#1) and Teddy (#7), the winning pitcher.

Teddy’s pitching was absolutely incredible, as he kept every batter for the Green Knights guessing. He only allowed one hit.

With Andy first in the batting lineup, the Spartans were off to a good start when he opened the game with a single. The next two batters also hit singles, then Brian Ronai’s hit resulted in two RBIs.

Also in the first inning Max Scheps, Adam Hurwitz, Colin Beaulieu and Andy Hague each scored, giving Amity a very comfortable 6-0 lead.

The second inning showed no change, then the third inning with two walks, four hits and Jack Nolan’s two-run double pushed Amity up to an even more impressive 12-0 lead.

This game even included a surprise appearance in the batting lineup by Amity first baseman Chris Winkel, a senior who’s been sidelined by a hand injury that occurred during the Baseketball season.

It was nice seeing him play first base again, although Nolan has been doing a good job there in his absence. Yet we were surprised to see him step up to the plate.  True to form, Winkel hit a single in the fifth inning.

When it looked like the Green Knights would not be able to catch up, Amity fans got to see what five of the pinch hitters could do in the sixth inning. Alec Smith, Sebastian Formica and Rohan Patel drove in runs and each scored. Rounding out the five, Matthew Sabitsky and Michael Dietch also made hits, but never had the opportunity to cross home plate.

Senior Michael Stewart (#10) also had a chance to pitch in the sixth.

At 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, Amity will play in the Class LL first round game in Woodbridge against the winner of the Farmington/Stamford game.

Amity is gearing up for an opportunity to win its fourth consecutive State Championship Title.

In 2015, the Amity Boys Baseball and Girls Softball teams both won the SCC Title. The boys went on to win the state championship.

This year’s teams have big, big cleats to fill. With the graduations of memorable players on both teams: Softball-Janaya Young, Jill DeMaio Baseball – Matt Ronai, Devin Belenski, Mike Appel, these players have to step up to the plate and do their best.

The 2016 teams have been playing scrimmage games over the past two weeks and so far, they are looking good.
