Girl’s Basketball: Lady Spartans vs Green Dragons

IMG_8111The Amity Girl’s Varsity Basketball team swooshed its way to its third consecutive win Friday night as they battled it out with a formidable opponent, the Hamden Green Dragons.

For Amity’s newlywed Coach Michelle Shoop this looks to be a big year, her young team, led by captain Elise Graham, already is showing a lot of promise, passing the ball and playing harder with each passing game.

Adding to the excitement at Amity during this game was the presence of most of the 2013-14 players who graduated in June. The girls, who are on holiday break, cheered their former teammates on from the sidelines — and they weren’t disappointed.

“It was great seeing our seniors from last year coming out to support us. They’re all home for break,” Shoop said. “They’re the one that started this four years ago, starting a new tradition at Amity so it’s great that they’re following up.”

The Lady Spartans stayed ahead of the Green Dragons throughout the game 1st Q 12-10; 2nd Q 20-19; 3rd Q 29-21.

Graham (#24) was the high scoring player with 19 points — 8 of them in the second quarter.

“Hamden is a good team, with a couple of good players, they play tough, they’re strong, they’re big. So in the first half we were a little slow getting started,”Shoop said, “We out rebounded them in the second half and that’s where we went on our push.”

She added, “Elise had a great game. she had 19 points, 10 rebounds 5 assists and 3 steals and she did a great job passing the ball to everyone.”

Junior Molly Dragan (#23) was the second highest scorer with 8 points, followed by senior Kaitlin Thomas (#12) contributing 7 points

On Hamden’s side, senior Lauren Singleton (#10) was the high scorer with 9 points, followed by junior Jessica Davis (#4) and sophomore Tahjai Mazyck (#2) each with 8 points.

Amity defeated Hamden 43-31.
