The Amity Girls Basketball Team was away at Career Magnet in New Haven on Wednesday night for what turned out to be a nail-biting heartbreaker in double overtime.

The Lady Spartans took an early lead against the Panthers outscoring their opponents 14-5 in the first quarter. They held onto their lead in the second quarter, even though they were outscored 12-9 by the Panthers. Score 23-17 Amity at the half.

The Panthers came alive in the third quarter, making 20 points to Amity’s 7 and taking a 37-30 lead.

The final quarter had both teams fighting hard for a victory with a lot of back and forth that was too close for comfort, the Lady Spartans had 17 points to the Panther’s 10, resulting in a tie… and overtime.

Both teams scored 6 points in overtime ending in yet another tie  — 53-53.

The second overtime was a battle for the win, but Career outscored Amity 10-7 and won the game 63-60.

Amity’s top players

Elise Graham was the game’s top scorer with 26 points, Molly Dragan 13 (including one 3-point goal), Kate Helfenbein 1 0-0 2, Emma Gehr 7 (including one 3-point goal), Alexa Gibbs 10.

Career’s top players

Ky’Jae Hargrove 7 5-7 19, Ashley Arroyo 13 (including three 3-pointers), Nia Hubbard 12 (including one 3-point goal), Breion Knox 11.
